Healthy Items to Stock Your Kitchen

With a large family that is always on the go, I’m always looking for easy snacks that I can stock so I’m never without healthy options. I asked Hannah from Wholesome Nutrition Co. to share her favorite items to stock up on. In case you missed it, Hannah shared her favorite tips for getting back into a routine earlier this month.

The key to healthy eating is making sure you have healthy items available! Here are a few items I recommend keeping in your kitchen at all times.

Freezer

  • Lightly breaded, frozen chicken tenders. I love the Perdue brand! I keep these in my freezer for quick meals like a salad, a wrap, or even just to eat plain. The nutrition is really reasonable on these compared to other chicken strips. I like to make mine in the air fryer!
  • Steamable veggies. You know the super easy bags of vegetables you can throw in the microwave for 5-6 minutes? These are really easy, healthy side items you can put with any meal. Did you know frozen vegetables have just as much nutritional value as fresh? That’s because they are frozen immediately after being harvested so they don’t lose any nutrients!
  • Frozen fruit. This is great for smoothies!

Refrigerator

  • Fresh produce. You can buy pre-cut, pre-bagged items if that’s easiest for you, or wash and cut them yourself. I highly recommend putting them in clear containers toward the front of your fridge so it doesn’t get lost in the produce drawer never to be seen again (you know what I’m talking about).
  • Greek yogurt and/or cottage cheese. Both of these have a good amount of protein when you’re in a pinch and need to add protein to your meal. Not to mention they are an excellent source of calcium.
  • Flaxseed. This is a great way to add some omega 3’s (heart-healthy fats) and fiber into your diet. Flaxseed also helps fight inflammation. You can add this to your yogurt, smoothie, cereal, or muffins.

Pantry

  • Nutritious granola bars. I love the Kind brand, especially the Healthy Grains bars. They are 100% whole grains and gluten-free (if you need gluten-free). I also love Clif Mini Builder Bars (10 grams of protein!) and the Kodiak brand granola bars. They’re all made with fantastic ingredients and are well-balanced for a perfect snack.
  • Whole grain bread or tortilla wraps. For bread, the Dave’s Killer brand is a great option with over 21 whole grains and it tastes great. Our family also loves the Mission whole wheat carb control tortillas. Whole grains provide loads of fiber and benefits for heart health.
  • Beans and nuts. Okay I know they aren’t the same, but I couldn’t decide which of the two I wanted to include so I chose both! These provide a bunch of fiber as well as several beneficial minerals like magnesium, zinc, selenium, and manganese. I love the Skinny Dipped cocoa-covered almonds for a little sweet and savory snack.

Refreshing your home after the holidays

I adore the holiday season so much that when we take down our Christmas decor I get a little heartsick. I think that’s totally normal because it is such a joyous season and it has a tendency to fly by and be over before we realize it. So every year when we take down our holiday decor I make a point to refresh our home in an energizing way! January is a fun time to reset surfaces and also a time to get back to the basics of home decor.  Our home has a strong blue and white palette that feels just as fresh during the winter months as it does in summer. We have a mix of natural fiber rugs, rattan, grasscloth wallpaper, and some traditional touches.

When refreshing your home here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Clear the clutter  Put all the Christmas gifts away.  If your children received new toys for Christmas keep them organized but clear the clutter. I purchased clear bins and gave each new item its own container. This helps teach the kiddos to put their items back in their corresponding container. I keep all of my gift cards in a zipper pouch in my purse so they are easy to find and hang up all new clothing items. Sometimes this initiates a bit of a purge. My rule is if it’s broken discard it.  If you haven’t worn it in a year donate.

Reset your surfaces Resetting your surfaces gives a fresh feel to your home. After the holiday decor has been put away I like to restyle my coffee tables and bookshelves giving them a fresh new look. It’s fun to mix up your surfaces and makes your home a new start for the new year! Start by removing everything from the surface and then re-add any items you want to display. I love using coffee table books, candles, and flowers.

Add in new throw pillows An easy way to change things up is by swapping out your throw pillows! This is a no-fail easy way to give your sofa or seating a facelift! This is also a great way to bring in a little color if you are feeling the winter blues creep in! A comfy throw blanket also helps keep things cozy in your space!

Fresh Flowers When in doubt add fresh flowers or a plant! This gives your room new life! I buy fresh flowers for our home every two weeks. I put fresh water in the vase each day in an effort to make them last longer. It’s amazing how fresh flowers can elevate your mood and your space! Check your local market or florist for options!

When you feel like your home needs more than a little shushing; a new piece of furniture, a new vase, or a rug can do wonders. Here are some of my favorite interior items that will also give your space a fresh and clean feel, perfect for the new year!

Getting Back Into A Routine

I am so excited about this blog post. My daily and weekly routines have fallen to the wayside lately and I’m desperate to get them back on track. I’ve partnered with Hannah Holzum to bring us all some of her best ideas for developing a routine! Hannah is a registered dietitian nutritionist and creator of Wholesome Nutrition Co, a virtual nutrition coaching and meal planning company. Hannah has worked as a dietitian for nearly 15 years and has helped thousands of adults and kids develop healthy eating habits during that time.

In her signature coaching program “Metabolism Makeover”, she helps busy moms get into a healthy eating routine while losing body fat/increasing muscle mass to feel and look their best. As a mom of 3 very active daughters, she understands firsthand how difficult it is to make time to eat well and exercise when you’re running kids around and trying to keep it all afloat!

The holidays are behind us and January is here! I don’t know about you, but January feels like the perfect time to get back into a routine. As a mom of three daughters and a business owner, I THRIVE on routine.

Here are my top tips on how to create a routine:

  • Write down your top priorities that you want to focus on. Are you hoping to exercise more? Do you want to stay more organized? I find so much value in writing things down. Jot down 2-3 things you want to add to your routine in 2023. You can keep these in your phone or in a journal.
  • Now write down 1-2 action steps you’ll do for each of your top 2-3 focuses. Here’s an example: If your goal is to eat more fruits and vegetables, maybe your two action steps are:
    • I will wash and cut up all fruits and vegetables once I get home from the grocery store.
    • I will add one fruit or vegetable to all meals and snacks.
  • The final, and maybe most important tip: Check in on how you’re doing! Are you adding value to your routine? Are you doing the things you said you were going to do? Is it working well and is it positively impacting your day-to-day life?

Here are a few things I’ve added to my daily routine that helps me feel successful!

  • I wake up 45 minutes before my kids wake up to have a little quiet time. During this time, I do my bible study, go over the daily schedule, and chat with my husband about what we have going on that day. This time gives me a minute to breathe and get my thoughts organized before the chaos starts.
  • I make my bed, start a load of laundry, and make sure my surroundings are picked up. Doing this helps me feel less anxious/overwhelmed as I start my day.
  • I drink about 20 ounces of water after I have my morning coffee. Drinking enough water is hard and I have to be mindful about it. Knocking out 20 oz first thing helps the rest of my day go smoother.

I can’t wait to jumpstart the year with these tips! Learn more about Hannah and her programs at Wholesome Nutrition Co and on Instagram and Facebook.

What To Buy With Amazon Gift Cards

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

We always end up with a few Amazon gift cards around the holidays and I’m sure you do as well. It’s so easy to add those balances to your account and forget about it. I find that if you’re looking to buy a higher-priced item, now is the time to use those gift cards. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Did you know you can get most fitness equipment on Amazon now? You can find everything from Nordic Track to Peloton on their site. As we all know how pricey these can get, it’s a perfect opportunity to utilize those gift cards. For the kitchen, I’d recommend treating yourself to a great coffee maker or an Amazon Echo. Both are everyday staples in our home. This Gucci Soho bag is a classic as well! (I’ve added this less expensive option below!)

If you’re looking to freshen up your home, I love these items that are both functional and pretty. This rattan side table is perfect for a bedroom, bathroom, mudroom, you name it! Rattan mirrors, bamboo melamine dishes, and a few beautiful green and white home decor options as well! Add in a coffee table book, candle, or tray and you’ve got a lovely little grand millenial home situation happening.

In terms of clothing this sweatshirt has been a recent favorite of mine and is the perfect lululemon dupe.  I also love a classic open front cardigan to add some sophistication to a tee and denim. This woven bag has been catching my eye for a while now as well!  In case you need more ideas you can always head to my amazon storefront and find more ideas by category! Happy Shopping!

Part of what I love about this time of year is the chance to get dressed up in our finest to celebrate the season with loved ones and friends. Our Holiday Home Tour

Our home is holiday ready and we are ready to sit back and enjoy it! I love dressing up (plaid dress here) (shoes here) during the holidays and entertaining family and friends! This year I wanted to share our home decked out for the holidays and I’ve teamed up with a couple of friends to create a week long tour of holiday homes! So be sure to check out these lovely ladies and their holiday decor!

Sarah Tucker

Kristy Cadwallader

Kate Hammer

Sarah Weisbrod

Let’s get started…

Our Holiday Stairway

I love adding magical moments to our home during the holiday season. The feeling that comes with Christmas is to me far better than the season. It is a true feeling of magic and I want our children to remember that feeling forever. I love adding candlelight in my favorite glass hurricanes or twinkle lights whenever possible. Sometimes that means throwing practical to the wind and embracing the magical! I always add a faux cedar garland to our wallpapered stairway and adorn it with ribbon for a festive touch.

Our Holiday Dining Room

I love adding in traditional Christmas red during the holiday season especially with blue and white decor.  Something about the pop of red mixed in with our daily home decor makes our home extra festive.  It is a fun time to embrace an extra pop of color when I ordinarily wouldn’t.

One of my favorite ways to decorate during the holidays is with greenery both real and faux. It is an easy way to fill this wicker vase and adds instant texture to the room. It also compliments our dining pendant as well! I added a combination of red and blue linen ribbon to our ginger jars in the dining room. It was a simple and inexpensive way to add a festive touch. I found this classic blue and white chinoiserie Christmas tree and thought it would be the perfect touch. This blue and white tablecloth has carried me through all the seasons.  I love a touch of classic navy!

Holiday Powder Bath

This already cheerful bathroom became even more so with a little holiday decor. I love adding a swag or wreath to wall sconces.  I found these sweet boxwood wreaths with red berries and added red ribbon for a nostalgic feel. I love these raffia wrapped glasses that I often double as a vase! Perfect vase for a small surface like our pedestal sink!

Holiday Living Spaces

Creating a cozy holiday haven for our littles has always been something I love to do. Our children really get into the holiday spirit and they love decorating the house and I love creating a joyful space for them to celebrate the season! We love gathering here to cuddle with our favorite blue herringbone blanket by the fire (fireplace screen linked here) , burning a Christmas candle, and watching holiday movies. Those are my favorite nights! We even built the Home Alone lego house this year to display! One of my all time, any season coffee table centerpieces is a large glass vase of hydrangeas.  It doesn’t matter what season it is because they are my favorite and I think decorating with what you love is ultimately most important!

Touches of Holiday in the Bedroom

I couldn’t resist adding a few holiday touches to our bedroom to make it extra cozy. I added in a plaid throw for extra cool nights and of course a wreath with a pop of red ribbon!

There are three things I love most about holiday decorating:

Mixing collected decor from over the years with new, using clippings from the outdoors, and pops of traditional red!

Thanks for stopping by! You can shop more of my holiday decor here and read about holiday decorating with Cailini Coastal here.

Favorite Holiday Reads

Hi Everyone! It’s Sarah and I’m back with my latest book recommendations. My love for the holiday season runs deep and that extends to holiday-themed books.  As a kid, my mom always put out these large holiday storybooks that I would sit and read over and over each year.  I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below and a new one that is on my list to read this season. Hopefully, there are a few that are new to you as well!

The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss

When it comes to relationships, thirty-four-year-old Kate Turner is ready to say “Bah, humbug.” But then her best friend signs her up for a dating agency that promises to help singles find love before the holidays. Twenty-three days until Christmas. Twelve dates with twelve different men. The odds must finally be in her favor . . . right? Yet with each new date more disastrous than the one before–and the whole town keeping tabs on her misadventures–Kate must remind herself that sometimes love, like mistletoe, shows up where it’s least expected. And maybe, just maybe, it’s been right under her nose all along.

This was my favorite holiday read last season. Sign me up for spending the holidays in quaint British Blexford!

Winter Street Series by Elin Hildebrand

Kelley Quinn is the owner of Nantucket’s Winter Street Inn and the proud father of four, all of them grown and living in varying states of disarray. As Christmas approaches, Kelley is looking forward to getting the family together for some quality time at the inn. Before the mulled cider is gone, the delightfully dysfunctional Quinn family will survive a love triangle, an unplanned pregnancy, a federal crime, a small house fire, many shots of whiskey, and endless rounds of Christmas caroling, in this heart-warming novel about coming home for the holidays.

This series of four books was what got me interested in holiday reads. The Queen of the summer beach read takes us to Nantucket for the annual Santa Stroll event. Start with book 1: Winter Street.

Last Christmas in Paris by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb

An unforgettably romantic novel that spans four Christmases (1914-1918), Last Christmas in Paris explores the ruins of war, the strength of love, and the enduring hope of the Christmas season. August 1914. England is at war. As Evie Elliott watches her brother, Will, and his best friend, Thomas Harding, depart for the front, she believes—as everyone does—that it will be over by Christmas, when the trio plan to celebrate the holiday among the romantic cafes of Paris. But as history tells us, it all happened so differently.

This one is for all my fellow lovers of historical fiction. It’s definitely not a light holiday read but very heartwarming.

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions. But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born. As she drives away, the next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, and everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Very cute and funny!

Duke, Actually by Jenny Holiday

A delightful contemporary Christmas romance, set in the heart of New York City, about a playboy baron and a woman who has said goodbye to love. There’s a royal wedding on, and things are about to get interesting.

My first holiday read of 2022! I’m halfway through this book and love it. While there are holiday elements to the story, it spans an entire year. This might be the perfect choice for those that don’t think they’re into holiday reads and want to dip their toe in.

Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory

Vivian Forest has been out of the country a grand total of one time, so when she gets the chance to tag along on her daughter Maddie’s work trip to England to style a royal family member, she can’t refuse. She’s excited to spend the holidays taking in the magnificent British sights, but what she doesn’t expect is to become instantly attracted to a certain private secretary, his charming accent, and unyielding formality.

I love all books by Jasmine Guillory and this is no exception! What I loved most about this book was that it features a romance between two middle-aged individuals instead of the typical 20 and 30-somethings in rom-coms.

The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans

Rick, Keri, and their 4-year-old daughter, Jenna, are hired as caretakers and are welcomed into the Victorian home of Mary Parkins, an elderly widow, just before the holiday season. As the relationship between Mary and the family develops we learn that Mary’s past sorrows are compelling her to share an important message with Richard. But will he understand her message in time? A heartwarming story of parental love, healing, and Christmas.

A holiday classic when we get too caught up in the season.

The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan

When the department store she works in closes for good, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. She doesn’t want to move in with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered Edinburgh life. At Sofia’s behest, Carmen is thrown into the daily workings of old Mr. McCredie’s ancient bookshop on the streets of the old dark city. Can she use her design skills to revamp the store and bring it back to popularity in time to benefit from Christmas shopping traffic?

It’s not a holiday read list without a story set in a bookshop! This book will have you wanting to pack your bags to spend Christmas in Edinburgh!

Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak

It’s Christmas, and for the first time in years the entire Birch family will be under one roof. Even Emma and Andrew’s elder daughter—who is usually off saving the world—will be joining them at Weyfield Hall, their aging country estate. But Olivia, a doctor, is only coming home because she has to. Having just returned from treating an epidemic abroad, she’s been told she must stay in quarantine for a week…and so too should her family. In close proximity, not much can stay hidden for long, and as revelations and long-held tensions come to light, nothing is more shocking than the unexpected guest who’s about to arrive.

This is at the top of my list to read this season! I was hooked from “aging country estate.”

Turn on the Christmas lights, light a candle, and snuggle up under your favorite blanket with one (or all) of these holiday reads this season. I can’t wait to hear your favorites! Not into holiday reads? Check out my Fall Reading List post!

Holiday Decor with Cailini Coastal

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

I love the holiday season and the magic that happens when you suddenly fill your home with twinkle lights and holiday colors. This holiday season I am honored to be decorating our home with Cailini Coastal and their beautiful holiday decor. Cailini Coastal is one of my favorite home decor shops. Their holiday collection is stunning! Cailini Coastal’s shop is filled full of coastal inspired decor in beautiful shades of blues, rattans, and coastal traditional pieces.

I am beyond excited to share some of my favorite holiday decor pieces that I used to decorate my home this year. I love how all of the Cailini Coastal’s pieces added classic yet festive touches to our living space. I hope that this round up of beautiful holiday decor will help you prepare for the most magical time of the year!

I adore this chinoiserie nutcracker as it reminds me of childhood. Our children love it and now want to start a collection of nutcrackers.

The Shades of Blue Bottle Brush set looks festive just about anywhere but I love how they look tucked into our bookshelves with my blue and white decor.

I’m a big blue and white decor fan and the Grand Millenial Ornament set in blue and white looks stunning on our tree.  I added red ribbons for a festive and classic touch!

If you are looking for a fresh candle that you can burn beyond the holidays this RE”ME.DI.UM x Cailini Coastal candle bowl is incredible and the sound of the wood wicks give all the cozy feelings. I will be burning this well past the holidays.

Holiday houses are just magical so I loved the Candy Cane Lane house and how it looks beautiful displayed in our shelves. It adds just the right touch of sparkle and whimsy.

If you haven’t checked out my holiday decor shop you can do so here where you can find even more beautiful pieces from Cailini Coastal!

I also love mixing in every day decor items with my holiday decor. Simply adding greenery to this french blue dipped vase added instant holiday charm. This sweet Petal Frog Vase is another piece I use throughout all the seasons. It is perfect for roses and lends a touch of tradtional decor.

A big thank you to Cailini Coastal for helping us celebrate our most cherished season.

Our home in HGTV magazine

Photo: Kevin Miyazaki Styling: Jen Decleene

After sharing snippets here and there of our home on social media we were finally able to open the doors for a full home tour with HGTV magazine. This has been such an incredibly exciting month! As some of you know, we were featured in the October 2022 issue of HGTV Magazine. (You can read the full article here or pick up a copy at your local bookstore!)

About the shoot

This feature was almost a year in the making as our home was photographed last October! We had such a fun and talented crew on set and I really enjoyed getting to know them during our short time together. So much hard work goes into a full home photo shoot. When the crew arrived they had car loads of photography equipment and a van full of flowers and decor. It was such an exciting two days and I feel like I learned so much from these wonderful people when it comes to styling, photographing, and editing for an editorial publication. It was so cool getting to watch these talented individuals work their magic!

So thankful!

We were so honored to share our home, a place that has been so special to so many in Adam’s family. Our children are the 5th generation to live in this home and we want to preserve it so the next generation can enjoy it just as much! I personally have now lived in this home longer than any other home in my lifetime so it is an extra special place to me.  Adam proposed to me here, we brought all of our children home from the hospital to this house, and we have created so many wonderful memories. We have worked hard to make this farmhouse a home perfectly suited for our family of six.  has been such a whirlwind month since the issue came out and I still can’t quite believe that our farmhouse was featured. It’s my favorite place to be and I’m thrilled to share my labor of love with all of you. You can find our feature with additional images here or on newsstands now!

It seems like the end of the year is rapidly approaching and with that comes the panic of starting my holiday shopping. My goal this year is to get my shopping done as early as possible so I can focus on the fun parts of the holiday season. More time baking cookies and cuddling up on the couch watching movies and less time frantically searching for last-minute gifts. I’ve pulled together a list of my favorite items to create these gift guides for everyone from family to teachers to pets and more. One of my favorites on the list this year is those ‘just in case‘ gifts. I like to stock up on a few extra gifts for when I inevitably forget someone on my list or receive an unexpected gift. It’s always good to have a few items tucked away.

Happy shopping!
