Styling bookshelves with Mark and Graham’s Dana Gibson collection

This post has been sponsored by Mark and Graham and contains affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

Rearranging your bookshelf or a large set of shelves can be intimidating. But once you get started, you just might find yourself having a lot of fun and enjoying the time you take to place your most beautiful items in the best places. I partnered with Mark and Graham and made selections from their beautiful new line with designer Dana Gibson to fill these shelves in our family room. This collection is full of beautiful blue and white traditional pieces that would look beautiful in any space. The block print ginger jars are a favorite of mine with their blue and white eye catching pattern! I also adore the Palm Leaf Tote with the interior lining repeating this playful design! There are so many beautiful pieces in this collection it was hard to choose favorites so I included many of the items in my bookshelf decor!

Getting Started

When I take on the task of tackling a bookshelf, my main goal is to keep it cohesive, collected, and timeless! Choosing the items you display on your shelves is an important step and you want to choose a unified set of items that make sense together. You also want to make sure you fill your bookshelf with items you love – balancing your color palette as well as the texture and size of your pieces as they sit next to each other. It’s even better when you can decorate your shelves for display as well as use them for storage — especially for items you want to keep hidden like toys, paperwork, etc…

Filling your shelves with items you love

Some of my favorite items to decorate my bookshelves with include ginger or temple jars, coffee table books to stack and layer and beautiful mongrammed trays for corralling items. Picture frames, decorative objects, and textured vases (like this set) are also beautiful additions to any shelf! For a sense of warmth I love to add a folded blanket like this Italian Herringbone Throw to the bottom shelf so they are easy to grab and use as needed. This block print catchall would make a beautiful addition to your shelves.

This is a great opportunity to display special collections, vintage books, or small antiques. Mixing in older pieces with new gives a collected feel and keeps it from feeling too stale. Each pocket of your shelf should have a sense of good balance and symmetry. Don’t overcrowd your shelves, rather play with the space and see which items pair the best together. And make sure to keep the messy stuff you don’t want seen in your baskets below. A bookshelf looks best when it’s well organized!

You can have a basic color palette (like naturals and whites with an accent or two of blue) or you can have a playful one (like every color in the rainbow), just make sure to pick colors that speak to you and give character to your new shelf display as well as the space it’s in. One of the best ways to show off how cohesive and collected your shelves are is to pick colors that work together. I am a huge fan of blue and white with natural touches so I have selected items for my shelves from this beautiful new collection in that color way.

Take a step back and observe

When you step back to take a look at your work, fix anything that seems off. Finding the right balance is key, and it can take some trial and error to get it to the point where everything feels good. And, if you still feel like it’s missing something, you can always add a few more items to make it feel visually balanced! Use these tips to get started and you will be mastering the art of bookshelf styling in no time!

Special Bonus: I have also found that styling a coffee table can be just as easy with some of the same items!  For coffee table styling my go to items include beautiful coffee table books, a tray, decorative objects like this block print ginger jar, and fresh flowers in a beautiful vase like this one! If your home is cohesive you can move items from one space to another with ease! I love how this coffee table styling turned out using some of the same items! Head over to Mark and Graham to check out the rest of this beautiful collection!

Thank you to Mark and Graham for partnering on this fun project! All opinions are my own.

Outdoor Entertaining with Mark and Graham

School is out and the summer season is in full swing!  This is the season for making lasting memories.  We welcome every opportunity to host gatherings on our patio. There is something so special about moving your meal outside when the weather is just right. I partnered with Mark and Graham to kick off the summer entertaining season with some of my favorite entertaining essentials! Marble cheese boards, lacquered trays, and personalized wine glasses are a few of the beautiful pieces that I love to use from Mark and Graham. Entertaining can be overwhelming, but I am here to help you keep it simple, beautiful, and make it an evening you and your guests won’t soon forget!

Outdoor Entertaining Ideas

Make it memorable and magical

Moving your meal outside creates a fun new experience. I love to enhance the 5 senses to create an unforgettable moment for my guests.  Whether it is the smell of a charcoal grill, dimly lit candles, or the setting sun in the background, you are instantly creating a memorable experience with your loved ones. One they will look back on and hope to recreate themselves.

When it comes to entertaining, even just for my family, I like to elevate the moment and create a visual feast.  An easy way to do this includes putting fresh flowers on the table.  Whether you visit your local florist for a bundle of hydrangeas or gather them in your yard, your guests will appreciate the special touch! Using beautiful serving pieces, even just for summer staples like hamburgers off the grill, elevates any outdoor meal. Layer your tablecloth, placemats, and personalized linens to add texture and warmth. This creates a memorable and magical atmosphere for your guest.

Keep it simple and in season.

The simpler the menu the better. Visit your local farmers market to find beautiful fresh produce to add to your menu. Serving a seasonal menu of grilled vegetables, fresh fruits, charcuterie, and crudité create a visually beautiful feast. Mark and Graham’s marble and wood cheese boards are the perfect serving pieces for any event. Utilize the day before to prep any food to make it easier the day of.

I cut or purchase my flowers a day ahead and put them in a beautiful vessel such as this handcrafted cane vase (comes in a set of 2). I often use hydrangeas because they set the scene for summer so effortlessly and, I adore them. Another option is to cut flowering branches from the yard to fill vases for a bold centerpiece.

I load my favorite bamboo lacquer serving tray with sparkling water, sodas, and seltzers as well as a variety of wines and beer so there is something for everyone. Bowls of sliced citrus for garnish add the finishing touch.  I prepare a playlist in advance to set the tone for the evening. Here is one of my favorite playlists for outdoor entertaining right now! (Maggie’s outdoor entertaining playlist)

Find balance between beauty and comfort.

Making sure your guests are comfortable and relaxed is key! It is important to me that everyone feel relaxed, welcome, and happy. I keep these Mark and Graham Italian herringbone throws scattered around for chilly evenings when the sun goes down. Comfortable seating allows everyone to unwind and settle in. Cheers to the summer season and creating magical moments with your loved ones. Mark and Graham’s beautiful products make summer entertaining effortless and beautiful!

Our front porch in the Spring

Happy Friday, Friends! I don’t know about you, but many of my favorite moments are spent resting and relaxing on my front porch. Your front porch should always be a beautiful, peaceful spot where you can spend your mornings with a good cup of coffee or your evenings unwinding with family. There was a time that we didn’t use this porch but after putting some elbow grease into it we have found a spot that the whole family enjoys.  We have the most spectacular sunset views from here too. To help inspire your outdoor decorating, I wanted to share my front porch favorites with you.

We recently gave the ceilings and floor a fresh coat of paint.  I decided to match our shutters and painted them both Blue Porcelain by Benjamin Moore.  My favorite shade of blue! I love when porch ceilings are painted blue and think it adds a beautiful touch of color. Our front porch is the only spot on our home where the original shingles are exposed and I love it so much.  Someday I would love to remove the siding and expose the rest of the house.

I love this french bistro folding table and it’s become a definite staple on my porch.  Perfect for morning coffee, breakfast, a laptop with lunch, or an evening glass of wine. I paired it with these weather-friendly grey outdoor riviera dining chairs which also come in a pretty natural dune and bright atlantic blue. I love that they are so easy to care for and wipe down if needed.  I found this outdoor rug that adds an extra layer of comfort to the porch.  It is soft to the touch and easy to vacuum when necessary.  Adding in layers creates so much warmth and this rug really helped achieve that feeling in this outdoor space.

To add extra greenery to my porch, I took this set of white planter boxes and filled them with beautiful flowers.  Along with these classic, white planters, I use these pretty blue and white planters to help brighten my porch with more of my favorite blues. And, I find it important to keep exterior lighting classic, especially on a traditional farmhouse like ours so I’ve placed this outdoor wall lamp by our front door. This outdoor brass lantern would also be a great addition to place on a side table, on your porch steps, or by your front door.

You can always add a little bit of peace and beauty to your front porch just by picking the right items to decorate it with.  Our front porch is one of my favorite spots to sit and relax with my family. The items I’ve curated on my porch are a mix of all of the things I find charming and beautiful, and those are aspects I make sure to use in every space of my home. So, if you loved seeing my front porch decor, check out My Living Room Decor.

Curb Appeal

It’s the middle of Spring, and if you haven’t already started, you’re probably prepping your outdoor spaces. Getting your outdoor spaces ready for the upcoming warm weather season is a good excuse to refresh your home’s curb appeal. So, take time this season to update those aspects of your home that you might not think about often, like your mailbox, door, and doorknobs.

When it comes to upgrading your mailbox, consider a locking mailbox for extra safety. You can get it in this cute and fun grass green color or go for a simple black or white choice. This rural post mount mailbox is the perfect choice if you’re wanting a more classic and natural vibe, and it comes in a grounding, warm brass or bronze. If you’re needing a mail slot rather than a mailbox, this mail slot is a sturdy option in polished brass, satin nickel, or oil rubbed bronze.

Need to replace your door? Add a bit of classic, country charm to your home with this exterior dutch door which is designed to withstand all types of weather. This door also comes with a door frame to make it easier to install.

Lastly, take some time to update your doorknobs. There are so many fun options to choose from that’ll help enhance your door’s personality. This Putnam white porcelain knob is so beautiful and it’s an American classic inspired by a popular design from the early 1900s. I also love this Rigdon knob set in brass. It’s unique coining detail makes it the perfect pick if you’re wanting to make a statement. Or, if brass isn’t your color, grab this Tate door set in satin nickel or this Rome tall door set with a globe knob.

Upgrading your mailbox, doors, and doorknobs are just some of the ways you can step up your home’s curb appeal this spring and summer. If you’re wanting to freshen up your front porch, check out My Front Porch Decor for inspiration.

Spring showers, flowers, and farmers markets

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

April is almost over and between the spring showers, we’ll be enjoying more of our family time outside with farmers markets, gardening, and meals on the patio! So, we’re freshening up our patio arrangement by adding more textures and preparing our tools and supplies for the work we’ll be doing in the garden. To help inspire you and your alfresco space, here are some ideas for this spring’s trendy outdoor living and design styles.

Start decorating and adding a little bit of life to your patio with these terracotta scalloped planters and easily label your freshly planted flowers or herbs with these beautiful blue and white ceramic plant markers.

Make working in the garden easier with this rattan gardening tool basket, and this kid’s gardening set is also a great if you have children who like to assist you in the garden or help you pot plants. This brass watering can makes it easy for you to keep your plants hydrated, and you can use this pine and maple garden carry-all basket to easily collect your ripe fruits and vegetables or a bouquet of blooming flowers for your dinner table.

When enjoying the beautiful spring weather or hosting a get-together on your patio, grab some outdoor string cafe lights to help liven and lighten up your porch no matter what time of day it is. Choose this white, metal patio bistro table with chairs and a gorgeous aqua scalloped umbrella to get your outdoor space ready for spring gatherings, and read my latest Dining Al Fresco post for more inspiration!

Mix up your patio seating arrangement by adding these outdoor woven dining chairs with this wicker and metal chair set, and choose between a trendy, textured rattan woven bench or a classic, antique white wooden bench to dress up a dull or awkward space and add more seating options. Add an all-weather wicker side table into the mix for added dimension and more textured decor.

And, of course, no outdoor patio is complete without a wicker driftwood bar cart that is foldable and easy to move, so you can use it out or indoors! Check out my most recent Bar Cart Story to get inspiration on how to decorate and stock yours!

Pretty Lampshade Options

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

It’s easy to overlook the little things that really add to a room’s decor. These little things can help enhance and set the vibe of the space they’re in, especially when it comes to lighting. That’s why it’s so important to take into consideration the lampshades in your home.

They may not seem so important to you, especially when lampshades are often already attached to a base when you buy them, but choosing a pretty lampshade is one of the best ways to tie a room together. It’s also an easy way to breathe some new life into your room’s decor if it starts feeling a little stale.

Here are three things to consider when picking a pretty lampshade:

Light

What kind of light are you wanting to achieve in that space? Choosing a dark shade will help block light if you’re wanting to set a moody or calming tone. But if you’re hoping to invite more light and energize a room, a lighter colored lampshade would be a better option.

Colors

What is the room’s color palette? When choosing a lampshade that fits your color palette you can either blend it in with your color palette, use your lampshades as a way to add a pop of color, or keep it simple. I love blending in patterned blue and green lampshades to match the rest of my colors. I also enjoy using bright red or yellow lampshades as a pop of color in my space. But, it’s also okay to play it safe by adding a simple, classic white or beige lampshade into the mix.

Patterns

One of my favorite things to do is play with patterns in my designs, and lampshades give you the chance to add a flair of style. I like to make sure that the patterns I choose don’t clash with other patterns being used. I also like to have a balance between patterns and colors so the space doesn’t feel too overwhelming. Floral patterned lampshades are especially my favorite because they add a pretty, feminine touch while livening up a room.

Lampshades are such a great way to easily update your home and freshen up a room. Take some time this fall to add a few new lampshades around your home and notice the difference it makes!

Dining Al Fresco

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

Happy Friday, Friends! The warmer days are slowly approaching, and I’m hoping to take advantage of them as much as I can this Spring. One way I’m doing that is planning an al fresco dining experience for my family and friends. Whether it’s for brunch, lunch, or dinner, you can make your al fresco dining complete by decorating your table with textures like bamboo and wicker, melamine serving platters and dishes, pretty linens, gorgeous glassware, fresh flowers, and your favorite candles.

When setting your table for al fresco dining, the best place to start is with a good set of placemats that add a pop of color, like these blue buffalo plaid check placemats. Then add this set of classic chinoiserie melamine plates* or these pretty hydrangea patterned melamine plates. Pair them with a set of bamboo plastic piece silverware* which are great for outdoors. Add a pretty set of gingham napkins wrapped with these wood bamboo napkin rings to finish off your set-up.

Next, choose your glassware. I love these monogram wine glasses* which can add some personalization to the mix, or these gorgeous cobalt stemless wine glasses are a good option, too. You can also add texture to your table with these beautiful island wrapped glasses.

Decorate your outdoor dining table with this poetta vase filled with your favorite fresh flowers and place your favorite candle in this island wrapped hurricane. This cambria melamine bowl* is a beautiful piece to use to serve salad or store fruit at the center of the table, and a gorgeous seagrass wrapped pitcher* is a practical piece that will include more texture in the mix.

Lastly, choose the best set of chairs to fit your table. I love this set of buchanan patio dining chairs*. They’re made with weather-resistant steel and woven with all-weather wicker. This gardener dining chair is another good outdoor option. It has a beautiful, classic iron frame and its cushion is made from all-weather fabric. Dress the backs of your chairs in a soft herringbone throw blanket* just in case your guests need a little bit of extra warmth as the summer sun goes down.

I love hosting an al fresco dining experience, and I especially love the decorating and set-up involved so I can make sure it’s a beautiful one for my guests. Any piece I use in setting my table is thoughtfully planned and placed, and it helps to have a good space where you can create beautiful moments for you and your loved ones.

Keeping your entry table stylish and organized

Our early 1900’s farmhouse does not have what one could call a proper entry.  When you come in the front door you immediately enter into our living room.  When you enter the back door you step into our mudroom/laundry space.  Most of our friends and family always enter our home through the back door and I wanted to create a proper station of sorts where our guests and our family could drop keys and hang a jacket.  It was also important to me that this was inviting and cheerful especially since it creates a first impression upon our home! Here are some tips on keeping an organized entry space!

Start with a table

Have an entry table is a great way to create a beautiful moment in your home and keep your belongings organized.  This table (similar one here) is a drop zone for ourselves and guests and I love to style this table in a welcoming way.  I wanted an entry table with two shelves so I could keep certain items handy like a dog leash or a pair of sandals when I need to run out the door at quick notice.

Ground it with a rug

I love grounding a space with a rug.  Often if a space looks bare it usually needs a rug.  Since this is a high traffic area I opted for a washable rug that I could easily throw in the wash or spot clean when necessary.  Having a rug here also warms up the space and gives it a finished look.

Use baskets for storage

I added these beach house baskets on the bottom shelf of my table for seasonal items to be stored in such as hats, gloves, sandals, etc… Baskets are such a great decor item yet functionally store unsightly items keeping them within reach. Baskets are also fun to shop for as they are made in so many different shapes, sizes, and materials.  Some of my favorite places to shop for baskets include The Container Store, Marshalls, Serena and Lily, and Crate and Barrel.

Style with functional accessories

I love using pretty little dishes or trays as a spot to drop keys or other small important items.  Umbrella stands for rainy days, a woven bag for the market, and wall hooks to hang jackets or scarves.  Make it both beautiful and functional.

Add a mirror or art

Adding a mirror creates depth to your space but is also perfect for that last look as you head out the door!  I love how this mirror has simple clean lines and doesn’t compete with everything else that is happening in this space but perhaps you would prefer a statement mirror or fun piece of art to create conversation with your visitors!  Check out my blog post on beautiful mirror options for your home here!

Finish the space with fresh flowers

Fresh flowers are so welcoming in any space.  Try using a contrasting color for a pop against your walls and change them with the seasons.  These pink flowers in my favorite woven vase are so cheerful and happy and the perfect welcome for the Spring season!  You can also pop my favorite faux tulips into a vase on your entry table!

My favorite bar cart 3 ways

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

One of my absolute favorite pieces of furniture in our home is my bar cart.  It is one of the most versatile pieces I have ever purchased and can be used functionally in our home in almost every room.  Added bonus  that it is on casters and can be easily moved from one space to the next! There are so many different ways to use this piece of furniture. I have used it next to my bathtub as extra storage, pulled it out and set it up as a bar for parties and holidays (see my Valentine’s Day bar cart post here), taken it outside for entertaining, set it up with jars of candy for trick or treaters on our front porch, as well as using it for a bar during Thanksgiving (read that post here) and Christmas holidays! I have never met a piece of furniture that can do so many things and that is why LOVE showing you mine so much!

Bar carts provide surfaces to stylishly style your belongings. I purchased this one at Serena and Lily and it is well built and has a classic rattan wrapped frame.  It is such a pretty piece and adds the right amount texture to every space.  If you don’t have a bar cart and are considering getting one you won’t regret it! There are so many ways a bar cart can be used or displayed without alcohol or setting it up as an actual bar and they are also great in small spaces! Check out the three different ways you can use a bar cart in your home below!

Bathroom Storage

I love using my bar cart as extra storage.  It has been so functional in my bathroom where I lack storage for some of my most used items.  I love to keep things organized and in their place so this is a perfect option for next to my bathtub.  It holds my favorite monogrammed towels and some of my favorite perfumes, hair care, and skin care products.  I keep my my favorite zippered pouch with my toiletries here as well!  You can read my post on styling a bathroom bar cart here!

Living Space End Table

This might be one of my favorite ways to use this piece because you can really show it off when you have company over!  I turned the bar car vertically against our sectional and used it as an end table. It’s the perfect surface size for a lamp, fresh flowers,  a stack of books, and still allows space to set down a glass of something refreshing.  The second shelf provides ample storage for extra books, folded throw blankets, puzzles, or board games.  This bar cart has a vintage feel to it and that is one of my favorite aspects! I also really love how the rattan looks against our white sectional (also from Serena and Lily).

As a Nightstand

Talk about the perfect amount of storage!  This works beautifully as a nightstand in both a beautiful and functional way.  The rattan really pops against the wallpaper and creates such a beautiful moment in our primary bedroom! (similar paper here) There is plenty of space for a lamp (read about my favorite lamps here), a glass of water, books, and more. I also love to add fresh flowers in a pretty vase. They keep things cheerful!  If you use a bar cart as a nightstand you could add a pretty woven box on the shelf to hold unsightly items like hair ties and tv remotes.  It is such a great nightstand option!

When styling your bar cart in any space in your home just remember to have fun with it!  It is a great surface to store and show off your favorite items in any space or for any occassion!

Picture Sconces

Picture sconces are not only a beautiful design detail but they illuminate a piece of art in such a pretty way.  I love showcasing my artwork with picture sconces and this caned picture light sconce in the photo above is a beautiful piece of art in itself!  I love adding texture into my spaces so I knew this picture light would be perfect above one of my favorite pieces of art!

When hanging a picture light over a piece of art the goal is to spread the light evenly on the artwork and to avoid a hot spot or glare.  I hung my picture sconce five inches off the top of my art work and tilted the head of the light 30 degrees so it will disperse an even amount of light onto the art and minimizing the glare.  I always prefer to select LED bulbs for picture lights because they do not emit ultraviolet light and very low heat which can potentially cause damage to your art over time.  Most picture lights require to be hardwired but there are some battery operated options available these days!

I love the intimate glow that picture sconces create, making you want to really come in for a closer look.  They also create a thoughtful moment and add personality to any space.

Holiday Table with Serena and Lily

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

The entertaining season is in full swing and we entertain in our home quite often around the holidays. There is nothing I love more than sitting around a beautifully decorated table with family and friends and enjoying a meal together. I really believe a beautifully set table will set the tone for your meal and it also makes your guests feel extra special! I knew this season I wanted to use some of the beautiful tabletop items from Serena and Lily on my holiday table.

When I was selecting tabletop items from Serena and Lily I wanted to choose items that would be neutral enough for any time of the year. I chose neutral placemats and linen napkins for this reason. I knew that I could use these items any time of the year and would select a fun tablecloth from my linen closet for a pop of color. We set the table every evening for dinner, sometimes the island too! So I selected the round Catalonia Placemats in natural from Serena and Lily to layer over the tablecloth. I layered my dishes on top of the placemats to create some dimension on the the table surface. I love to layer and I also love clippings from the yard so I snipped some holly berry leaves to place on top of the Salento Napkins (in flax) for a little pop of festive color! I added in brass flatware and of course champagne!

There are so many other beautiful tabletop items from Serena and Lily, that I love to use when entertaining. The Cayman Seagrass Wrapped Pitcher is perfect for lemonade, iced tea, or water. I use this pitcher quite often as a vase for flowers! I also love using the Poetta Vase as a larger vase for big bouquet of hydrangeas or greenery. A marble lazy susan like the Millerton Lazy Susan is the perfect foundation for the center of your table, especially if it is round. I love having a lazy susan on our table, especially one this beautiful!

If you choose not to use a tablecloth the table runners are a gorgeous option and a good way to add some texture to your tabletop. I also love adding in candlelight and the carmel rattan taper holder would make a beautiful addition to any table, especially with colored taper Candles. I love the avocado color for Christmas! If you are looking to add a little fun to your tabletop I would recommend the Holiday Crackers! Our kids love these at any celebration or party!

I love working with Serena and Lily because the quality of their products is second to none. And, as a decorator, I’ve found that it’s so important to purchase quality pieces that will stand the test of time … I want my company to enjoy themselves and feel casually comfortable around my dining table and Serena and Lily’s style evokes just that: casual elegance.

I am looking forward to entertaining our family and friends this holiday season and I am so thankful to have been able to work with Serena and Lily to help me select the perfect tabletop pieces to help with this! When you have the right pieces setting the table is a piece of cake! Happy Entertaining!

Thank you Serena and Lily for partnering on this post and gifting these beautiful pieces. All opinions are my own.
