Not only does a well-dressed bed exude a sense of luxury and warmth, but it also elevates the overall comfort of the space.

Now, I know that with an array of bedding options out there, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to figure out just how to achieve that coveted, perfectly styled look. Today, I’ll take you through my favorite tips and tricks for layering your bed like a pro. Together, we’ll navigate through the intricate layers of linens, duvets, and throw pillows to create a sanctuary that reflects your style. Let’s dive in and start crafting a bedroom that feels both chic and inviting—a place where every detail whispers comfort and elegance.

How To Layer A Bed

Making your bed each morning is more than just a daily chore; it’s a powerful way to set a positive tone for your day. A well-made bed creates an inviting atmosphere in your bedroom and can significantly enhance the overall aesthetic of the space. By layering your bedding intentionally—combining different textures, colors, and patterns—you not only elevate the visual appeal but also create a cozy retreat to unwind in at the end of the day.  Start your day with a sense of accomplishment and transform your bedroom into a sanctuary you love to return to!

Why Is Making Your Bed Important

Making your bed each day is more than just a simple chore; it has numerous benefits that can improve your overall well-being and productivity. Incorporating the habit of making your bed into your daily routine can have lasting positive effects on your mindset and living space. Here are a few reasons why it’s essential to start your day by making your bed:

Creates a Sense of Accomplishment

Completing this small task first thing in the morning can give you a feeling of achievement and set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Promotes Organization

A made bed contributes to a tidy and organized living space, which can reduce stress and help you feel more in control of your environment.

Encourages Good Habits

Making your bed daily can instill discipline and encourage you to maintain other good habits throughout the day.

Enhances Sleep Quality

A neatly made bed can create a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere, promoting better sleep at night.

Improves Focus

A clean and orderly space can help you concentrate better on tasks, leading to increased productivity.

Sets the Right Mood

Coming home to a well-made bed can create a sense of calm and relaxation, making your home feel more welcoming.

What Are The Different Bed-Making Techniques

Making your bed is not just a chore; it’s an opportunity to create a warm and inviting sanctuary.  By embracing these steps, you’ll transform your bed into a beautiful retreat, embodying both comfort and style that beckons you to unwind and relax. Here are some elegant tips to elevate your bed-making technique:

The “Coastal Crisp” Layered Look

This is my go-to in the summer months. Picture this: cool white sheets, a soft blue linen quilt, and a folded duvet at the foot, just in case a breeze rolls in. I like to layer different textures — cotton, linen, perhaps a bit of matelassé — and always finish with four pillows propped just so. It feels like a beach house where someone’s just come in with sun-kissed cheeks and sand on their ankles.

The “Tucked & Tailored” Hotel Style

On days when I want a little extra structure (or clarity), I turn to a more tailored approach. Corners sharply tucked in, the sheets are smooth and taut, and there is a certain symmetry in the arrangement. Think fresh pressed percale sheets, a simple monogram on the pillows, and a neutral palette with a quiet stripe or border. It’s not fussy, but it whispers, “I’ve got it together.”

The “Softly Rumpled Sunday Morning” Look

Some mornings call for ease. For sleep lingering in the air and coffee waiting in the kitchen. This bed is made… but just barely. A linen duvet is loosely draped, maybe one corner is flipped back to reveal the sheets. Pillows aren’t stacked, they’re nestled. This bed says, “Stay a little longer”. It’s the in between of effort and exhale. I find this version is easy for teenagers who don’t enjoy making their beds!

The “Collected & Cozy” Cottage Mix

This one is for my sentimentalist. The ones who use the quilt their grandmother stitched or tuck an embroidered pillow in the middle just because it reminds them of summers in Provence. The sheets might be floral, but the shams might not match; however, they complement each other in a beautiful mix and match. There’s a sense of layers built over time—collected, not curated. It feels like love lives here.

How To Layer Your Bed Like A Pro

Step 1: Gather Your Essentials

Begin by collecting all the necessary items—a soft mattress protector, a fitted sheet, a smooth flat sheet, cozy blankets or a plush duvet insert, and an assortment of fluffy and decorative pillows.

Step 2: Protect Your Mattress

Place a mattress protector on your bed to keep your mattress clean and fresh; it serves as an excellent foundation for a beautiful bed. My personal favorite mattress is from Amerisleep. It is incredibly comfortable, and I believe that taking care of your mattress is very important.

Step 3: Dress the Mattress

Gently stretch a high-quality fitted sheet over the mattress, ensuring it fits snugly around the corners to create a smooth surface that invites you in. I have tried so many sheets over the years, and nothing compares to my favorite non-iron set.

Step 4: Layer with Elegance

Next, drape the top sheet evenly over the fitted sheet, ensuring the top edge aligns perfectly with the head of the bed. Leave a generous overhang on the sides to tuck under for a polished finish.

Step 5: Add Comforting Layers

Place your duvet cover on top of the flat sheet. I have tried so many duvet inserts over the years. Many people offer various suggestions on how to achieve a perfectly fluffy look. Some suggest doubling up two duvets, but really, you only need one good one. My favorite duvet insert can be found here. When layering, choose lighter fabrics on top and gradually incorporate heavier ones for warmth and texture. I like to fold my duvet cover in half and then fold it back up toward the head of the bed. This creates a sumptuous and fluffy look.

Step 6: Tuck with Care

Neatly tuck the flat sheet and comforter under the mattress at the foot and sides. For that luxurious hotel feel, fold back the top edge of both sheets to reveal a glimpse of the inviting layers beneath.

Step 7: Arrange Your Pillows

Place your sleeping pillows against the back.   I like to stack my pillows or lay them flat and stacked. In front, artfully layer standard or euro shams to create a charming display. For a queen bed, I recommend two standard shams or two euro shams.  For a king, I like to add three euro shams across the back. I often love to add a linen lumbar pillow across the front of the euros.

Step 8: Add a Cozy Throw

For a finishing touch, drape a soft throw blanket in a solid color or print gracefully across the top of the duvet or delicately over one side, inviting snuggles on chilly nights.

Step 9: Perfect the Details

Step back and admire your bed styling. Adjust any items to ensure a harmonious and tidy appearance, creating a stunning focal point in your bedroom. In the end, bed making isn’t about perfection- it’s about how you want to feel when you walk into the room. If you’re going to take it a step further, you can make some adjustments to your nightstand. Whether it’s buttoned up or barely there, I say make the bed that matches your morning.
