J.Crew Summer Staples

J.Crew Summer Staples
I adore Summer. It is the season of sun-kissed skin, warm breezes, and endless possibilities. Our schedules become a bit looser with the kids’ school and sports schedules being complete and we can enjoy those lazy Summer days. I love everything about the season, especially the fashion. It’s the perfect time to show off your personal style with some light and airy outfits. Be it a bright sundress, a cute pair of sandals, or a pair of sunglasses; you can never go wrong with a classic summer look. J. Crew summer staples are your one-stop shop for an effortless look this season.

My summer wardrobe consists of breezy sundresses, comfy sandals, and sunglasses. I have a soft spot for casually chic fashion and for years J.Crew has been my go-to brand for all things summer fashion. Their summer collection has many timeless pieces that never go out of style. Over the past few years, J. Crew has had a bit of a resurgence in the fashion scene. They release new collections every few months and they are all gorgeous.

J.Crew Summer Staples

For Summer, I love to pair a simple white t-shirt with high-waisted denim shorts or a flowy midi skirt. It’s effortless to style, yet it looks put together. When paired with a rattan clutch or bag, it feels so summery. I am also loving the re-emergence of the shift dress, as it is currently the easiest way for me to feel chic when I am on the go. For chilly nights, I love to throw a classic sweater over my shoulders for an extra layer.

With J.Crew’s vast selection of timeless essentials, creating a chic summer wardrobe has never been easier. Here are some of my current favorite J. Crew summer staples from this classic brand.

Patio Refresh for Spring

Patio Refresh for Spring

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of spending a warm spring day on your patio, enjoying the sunshine and fresh air after a long winter. As with most years, we needed to do a minor patio refresh for Spring. Whether you have a small balcony or a spacious backyard, there are plenty of ways to update your outdoor space and make it feel like a brand-new oasis. Here are some tips to help you refresh your patio for spring. With some simple updates and additions, you can create a welcoming outdoor space that’s perfect for relaxing, entertaining, and soaking up the sun.

Patio Refresh for Spring

Patio Refresh for Spring

Clean

The first step to a patio refresh for Spring is to clean it up. Sweep away debris, wipe down the patio furniture, and power wash the space, if needed. Winter always does a hard number on our patios so during those early warm days, we clean all outdoor spaces as it can take some time. If there are any extra items on the patio you’ve been storing there, it’s time to find a new home for them. Somehow a bike or soccer ball always seems to be living on our patio. I always love this stage. Once things are cleaned off, it’s a clean slate to make your patio as welcoming and cozy as you want it to be.

Add any new furniture pieces

Our patio furniture plays a big role in the overall look and feel of your space. If you have any broken patio furniture or those lumpy cushions that need replaced, now is the time to do it. Retailers seem to release new patio furniture earlier and earlier these days so keep your eye out on any upcoming sales. I like to create a mood board or save images of furniture I see online so that I have an idea of what I am looking for. There are so many options and styles out there that it’s good to have an idea of what you want ahead of time.

If your furniture is still in good condition, you can simply add new cushions or pillows to give it a new look.  Our furniture on our side patio was still in good condition so I added this striped pillow cover and this block print one

Bring in greenery and flowers

Adding plants and flowers to your space is an easy way to add new life to your patio. Consider adding some potted plants or hanging baskets to add color and texture to your patio. Choose plants that are easy to care for, such as succulents or herbs, or opt for more colorful options like petunias or geraniums. I planted a small hydrangea in this new scallop pot to bring a pop of color to balance out the neutral pillows.

Add lighting

Whether you love string lights, lanterns, or candles, having the right lighting ensures you can enjoy your patio after the sun goes down. It adds a touch of ambiance to your space. Once the kids are in bed, Adam and I love to sit on the patio off our bedroom in the evenings to catch up on each other’s day. I found these rechargeable table lamps on Amazon last year and they are perfect for an end table. You can also install outdoor sconces to illuminate the space.

Add the accessories

Whether it’s adding an outdoor rug, planters, or new throw pillows, those little touches are what make the space. I love this watering can for keeping the plants on the patio thriving. The sage color is so pretty!

With these simple tips, you can easily refresh your patio for spring. Whether you spend your mornings with a cup of coffee or wind down in the evenings with a glass of wine, you’ll love spending more time on your patio.

Spring Amazon Favorites

Spring Amazon FavoritesSpring is here and it’s time to refresh your wardrobe, beauty routine, and home decor. I have found so many great options on Amazon lately. I always like to share my favorites as the retailer is so vast that it can be easy to miss so many great options. Here are my Amazon Spring favorites.

Spring Amazon Favorites

Clothing

From pretty dresses to sun hats to protect your face from the sun, I have found so many great options for spring and summer. I had to include a few sweaters in here because you never know what you’ll get with Spring weather in the Midwest!

Accessories & Outerwear

Beauty & Health

I have been relying on undereye masks a lot lately. They’re so great to just pop on while you’re getting ready or when I’m answering emails. They are a must-have for photoshoot days! I’m also loving this foldable light up mirror. It’s great for if you need to do your makeup on the go and it will definitely be a travel essential going forward.

Spring Amazon home decor

Home Decor

Some of my Spring Amazon favorites for home decor are all about pretty ways to contain and hide things. From the storage boxes to the scallop trinket tray to the shelves, I’m trying to utilize more storage options. I also love the small details of the drawer pulls if you’re looking for a small-scale refresh.

Kitchen

I am leaning all into the spring colors for the kitchen. From pretty blue wine glasses and napkins to multicolored stemless glasses. I cannot believe that the floral plates are disposable! They are such a pretty way to brighten up your tableware for your next event or social gathering.

Furniture & Rugs

I think that Amazon is a great source for furniture and rugs. I often find great rattan and wicker pieces on the site and a lot of jute rug options. They’re also my go-to source for pillow inserts for beds and couches. My favorite spring find below is the hyacinth chair. I love the shape of it and the material. It would look wonderful in a sunroom or on a covered porch!

You can always shop all of my Amazon favorites over on my Amazon storefront.

If you’re looking for something more specific, I have blog posts on my favorite Amazon lights, rugs from Amazon, and my favorite furniture finds from the retailer.

My Easter Edit

Easter always seems to come at just the right time. When we’ve had enough of those winter months, spring is ushered in by the Easter holiday. The weather is starting to turn, the trees start to bloom, and those happy shoots of green start to make their appearance. I’ve pulled together an Easter edit that includes all of my favorite items to help celebrate the holiday. There is everything from spring-like home decor, linens, tabletop decor, Easter basket items, and what to wear on Easter Sunday. While some of my Easter roundup items are egg and bunny-themed, many of the finds can be used all throughout Spring and the entire year. I hope you find something that brings a little spring to your step this season!

Tabletop & Decor

I found so many great options for my home decor tabletop Easter roundup items! There are so many so many cute plates, placemats, glasses and vases out there right now. I couldn’t help but add some of my favorite pink and blue table linens because they are just so beautiful! It was very hard to narrow it down so I decided to include them all! I already own several of the Cailini Coastal vases and cachepots and they are perfect year-round.

Easter Blues

Easter Pinks

Kids Baskets

For my kids’ Easter baskets, I like to put in a new swimsuit, pair of sandals, and some sweets. You can’t have an Easter basket without a little candy! Depending on when the holiday lands in the year, the swimsuits and sandals are perfect for our annual spring break trip to Florida. If Easter falls later, it’s still a fun reminder that summer fun is on its way!

Swim

Sandals

What to Wear

One of my favorite memories from childhood is getting a new dress for Easter Sunday. It seemed like such an important moment and I was always excited to put on my new dress and shoes. Whether or not you still buy yourself a new Easter dress or are more casual for the holiday, I still like to lean into those spring-like colors. Easter bonnet not required!

For more of my favorite Easter edit and spring finds, head over to my LTK page. If you’re looking for more ideas for those all important baskets, check out my Easter Basket roundup post as well!

Our Feature in The Cottage Journal

Seventeen years ago, I could not have pictured myself in the countryside, much less on a farm. Yet, this charming farmhouse that my husband grew up in had completely stolen my heart! Fast forward to now, a renovation or two, and four kids later, our love for this home has only deepened. We were over the moon when The Cottage Journal asked if they could share our home in their spring issue! This milestone moment felt like a heartwarming affirmation of the countless hours that we have poured into this home. I am so excited to share a sneak peek of our feature in The Cottage Journal.

This home has stood resiliently through generations of my husband’s family, and knowing that it is poised to inspire others, fills us with an immense sense of pride and accomplishment. Our journey has been a labor of love- a testament to our commitment to honor the past while nurturing the beauty of our home.

Each space has been beautifully captured by the incredibly talented Erin Brown, whom I am so fortunate to work with every week. Erin possesses a remarkable photographic eye and masterfully captures the beauty of spaces with her camera. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Bethany Adams for writing the story, vividly illustrating the love and care we have infused into every corner of this home.

We are thrilled to share our feature in The Cottage Journal with you and I am so excited that Erin was able to photograph our home for the magazine. You can grab a copy on newsstands now to read the full story!

It is always surreal to see our farmhouse showcased in these magazines. For even more inspiration, you can read about our home when it was featured in HGTV magazine’s Fall of 2022 here.

Gray Malin Art Curation

We recently added some of Gray Malin’s beautiful photography into our home. I have been a longtime fan of his work and love seeing all of the different locations that he has captured. Incorporating Gray’s artwork into our farmhouse has breathed life into every space, inviting an air of vibrant energy and playfulness. Seeing his work in our home is like a visual love letter from the places that hold a special place in my heart. I love everything on his site so deciding which pieces to include in our home was tough! I narrowed it down to locations or themes that had meaning to our family. I am thrilled to share some of my selections with you below!

Travel

3 Days in Charleston

Earlier this month, I was invited on a trip to one of my favorite cities, Charleston, South Carolina, for a work trip. I deeply love the South and went to Charleston many times as a child with my parents. My father was from the Carolinas, so they have always had a special place in my heart! With a full bonnet and smocked gown, my mom and I would visit and enjoy this beautiful city. My brother and his wife also married in Charleston, which was the last time I visited. So when I was invited to shoot for the women’s clothing brand NavyBleu and their spring collection there, I was thrilled. It was a whirlwind 3 days in Charleston, and I loved every minute!

3 Days in Charleston

Where to stay when visiting Charleston, SC.

Hotel Emeline

I arrived on a Sunday afternoon and checked in to Hotel Emeline, feeling an exciting rush as I stepped into Charleston. The vibrant atmosphere of the city enveloped me, and I could hardly contain my anticipation for what was to come. The hotel itself was stunning—its charming architecture and warm, inviting decor instantly made me feel at home. Located in the heart of downtown Charleston and just steps away from the Charleston City Market, it was perfectly situated for my trip.

I loved staying at the Emeline because it was a short walk to King Street and South of Broad, meaning most everything was within walking distance. The rooms were beautiful, and I stayed in the Collectors Suite, a two-room suite that provided the perfect mix of luxury and comfort. I had a cozy sitting room, a lovely bathroom, and a king bedroom where I could unwind. As a mom of four, I cherished every quiet moment I had there.

Each morning, I treated myself to room service, savoring the coffee and taking advantage of the water stations just steps from my room. On my first day, though I was incredibly tired from traveling since I had been up since 3 a.m., I spent the afternoon walking around and shopping, soaking in the local sights. I also had an early dinner at the hotel restaurant, Frannie and the Fox, which was delightful. After such a long day, I couldn’t wait to get some much-needed sleep, but I was even more excited to explore more of this beautiful city the following day!

Things to do in Charleston, SC.

Grab a Coffee and go for a Walk Through Historic Charleston

On day two, I got up early, grabbed a coffee at Clerks, which is conveniently located in the Emeline lobby and went for a walk down by The Battery. The Battery is a historic area with views of Fort Sumter and landmark gorgeous homes. It was the most beautiful January morning, walking down by the water and looking at all the beautiful historic homes. Of course, I walked by Rainbow Row, a colorful row of historic buildings on East Bay Street, and had to snap pictures of all the pretty houses. The Joe Riley Waterfront Park is just a short walk from Rainbow Row and is home to the famous Pineapple Fountain.

As I continued my stroll through historic Charleston, I was captivated by the cobblestone streets and the charming architecture that spoke of the city’s rich past. Each building seemed to have its own story, from the ornate wrought-iron details to the vibrant window boxes overflowing with flowers that homeowners were just beginning to plant for the season. I wandered past the beautiful homes along the historic district, admiring every detail.

I chose to explore Charleston on my own during this trip, but if you’re a history buff, consider booking a walking tour or carriage ride through the city during your stay. It’s a fantastic way to delve deeper into the fascinating stories behind the buildings and the people who once called them home. Charleston is filled with so much southern charm, and you will find yourself inspired.

Go Shopping on King Street

The historic area of King Street seeps Southern charm, making it a delightful destination for shoppers of all kinds. With its vibrant atmosphere and stunning architecture, strolling down King Street feels like stepping back in time while enjoying modern amenities. You’ll find everything from small boutiques to large chain stores, creating a unique blend of shopping experiences.

During my visit, I shopped up and down King St. with my friend Emily, who lives in Charleston. We hit all the great stores, including Lake, Juliska, Beau and Ro, Sorella Glen, Veronika Beard, and more. The variety of shops ensures that there’s something for everyone, whether you’re searching for high-end fashion or a unique gift. I found many special things to bring home with me and, of course, bought a new pair of pajamas at Lake. Their store is darling, filled with carefully curated items that exude charm.

As we continued our adventure, we even went to Amanda Lindroth before she closed her doors. It was such a beautiful store and will be missed. The quaint decor and friendly atmosphere of the shops made every stop a joy. We also stopped at Croghans Jewel Box, the home of the Goldbug line, where the outstanding customer service further enhanced our shopping experience.

There’s something truly special about shopping on King Street. The blend of Southern hospitality and a vibrant shopping scene creates a memorable experience that keeps you wanting to return.

Grab Drinks on a Rooftop Bar

After a long day of shopping and exploring this delightful city, this is the perfect way to kick off your evening! As the sun sets, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors, enhancing the beauty of the skyline. Each rooftop bar has its own unique atmosphere, so you might choose to start with the cozy, intimate setting of The Citrus Club, where the elegant decor and carefully crafted cocktails set a refined tone for the night. Alternatively, the lively ambiance at the Vendue promises a vibrant social scene, often accompanied by live music. If you’re in the mood for something special, consider indulging in a signature cocktail or sampling local craft beers that showcase the region’s brewing talent. Don’t miss the opportunity to share a few small plates or appetizers with friends while soaking in the enchanting views and enjoying the soft breeze.

Dining Out

After a relaxing sip at one of these rooftop gems, you might want to continue your evening with a visit to one of the nearby restaurants that complement your rooftop experience. Charleston’s culinary scene is rich and diverse, offering everything from classic Southern fare to innovative fine dining. Each meal is sure to leave a lasting impression—and perhaps you’ll want to take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront afterward, savoring the charming ambiance of the Holy City as the night unfolds.

If you have been to Charleston, you already know how incredible the food scene is. There is such a love and appreciation for good Southern cuisine in this city, and it shows, so I knew that for my 3 days in Charleston, I would surely be in for great food. We dined at 167 Raw for lunch and shared local oysters, which were amazing! I couldn’t resist ordering a margarita and the crab salad. That evening I met up with another friend, Patricia Olsen of Piqued PR, for an early dinner at Sorelle. It was a marble dream inside. The interiors were just stunning, and I had one of the best meals, swordfish piccata. It was incredible and caught fresh locally! The bar here is first come, first served, so if you don’t have a reservation, you can try the bar instead! The following day we all met for lunch at Little Palm. This old Holiday Inn was converted into the most adorable hotel and restaurant. We had a great time and lunch was delicious! We even watched a Le Creuset photo shoot on their patio! That evening we had dinner at Frannie and The Fox inside Hotel Emeline. We had fantastic wood fired pizzas and the best chopped salad! I highly recommend Leon’s Oyster Shop, Basic Kitchen, The Ordinary, Fig, and Melfi’s

Start Your Day with a Southern Style Brunch

For brunch ideas, consider visiting Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits. Their biscuits are fantastic, and they have two locations: one in the City Market, where you can eat and shop, and another on Upper King Street. Another classic brunch spot is Poogan’s Porch, located on the charming Queen Street. It is one of Charleston’s oldest culinary establishments, offering a delightful selection of Southern dishes. The Darling Oyster Bar is the perfect spot for a remarkable Bloody Mary garnished with a giant crab claw. For those looking to indulge, the seafood frittata with lobster is a great choice, while anyone nursing a hangover might enjoy the fried chicken biscuit. Additionally, don’t miss their chowder fries, topped with clams and bacon—delicious! If you are up for a short drive or uber, The Obstinate Daughter is another great option located on Sullivan’s Island. Chef Jacques Larson, known for his Italian-inspired cuisine, serves up some exceptional brunch options by the beach. Diners flock to try the mafaldine carbonara or the Old Danger pizza topped with pancetta and a perfectly runny farm egg. When it comes to Southern food for brunch, you can’t go wrong with dishes like shrimp and grits, buttermilk pancakes, and fried chicken and waffles. Don’t forget to try traditional sides such as collard greens or biscuits with gravy. These flavors truly capture the essence of Southern cuisine and make brunch a memorable experience.

Visit the Charleston City Market

This historic Charleston landmark is one of the oldest public markets in the United States. It is situated in the French Quarter neighborhood and offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and Southern charm. Visitors can find a variety of items here, including jewelry, handmade crafts, and the renowned Sweetwater baskets. The market is a great place to shop and a hub for local artisans and vendors, showcasing the region’s creativity and talent. As you wander through the stalls, you can often hear live music and see street performances that add to the vibrant atmosphere.

Nearby notable landmarks include the Dock Street Theatre, which is America’s oldest theatre, and the French Huguenot Church, known for its stunning architecture and rich history. The area is also home to a variety of restaurants and cafés where you can sample traditional Southern cuisine, making it a perfect destination for both shopping and enjoying the local culture. Whether you’re a history buff, a shopping enthusiast, or a food lover, this charming market and its surroundings offer something for everyone.

Play Mahjong

If you have time during your visit, be sure to check out Holy Mahj. They regularly host fun events in the city and the surrounding areas. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, there’s an event for you! Additionally, Holy Mahj offers a welcoming atmosphere where you can meet fellow enthusiasts and improve your skills. From friendly competitions to casual meet-ups, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience the excitement and community spirit that makes these events so enjoyable!

Go to the Beach

If you’re planning a trip to the beaches near Charleston, SC, consider exploring some of the nearby options for a relaxing afternoon. Folly Beach is known for its laid-back atmosphere and classic beach experience. It features an iconic fishing pier and plenty of excellent dining spots. On the other hand, Sullivan’s Island is quaint and charming, offering a less touristy vibe with beautiful beach homes lining the shore. There are also many great restaurants to choose from here.

Additionally, Isle of Palms is another fantastic destination, perfect for families looking to enjoy water sports like kayaking, paddle boarding, and jet skiing. With wide stretches of sandy beaches and family-friendly amenities, it’s a great place to spend the day. For a quieter escape, check out Botany Bay on Edisto Island, where you can enjoy stunning natural beauty, picturesque landscapes, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Whether you’re relaxing on the beach, sampling local cuisine, or engaging in outdoor activities, the Charleston area offers something for everyone to enjoy.

My Favorite Amazon Lights

As someone who loves to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in my home, I’m always on the lookout for great lighting options. Good lighting can not only bring life to a room, but it can also have an impact on your mood as well. We’ve all experienced harsh overhead lighting that does nothing for a space and we all have those dark corners that could use a little bit of extra illumination. As an interior designer, I know the power of good lighting to add the finishing touches to any room. Amazon has become my go-to source for finding affordable and stylish lights that can instantly transform any space. These stylish lights can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room. They come in a variety of styles and can be used as a statement piece or to highlight a specific area. Whether you’re looking to add some ambiance to your outdoor space, create a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom, or update your home’s overhead lighting, Amazon has a wide range of affordable and stylish options to choose from. Valentines Day

Valentine’s Finds

Ever since I was a child, I have loved Valentine’s Day! Besides it being the most romantic day of the year, I find it to be such a happy and joyful day for children and adults alike. It is a time when we paint our nails red, watch romantic comedies, indulge in self-care, chocolate; and make heart-shaped everything. There are so many ways to spread the love with your family and friends on Valentine’s Day. Some of my favorites include sending a handwritten letter or card, cooking a meal, planning a fun activity, or giving a thoughtful gift. Sometimes the simplest acts of kindness can mean the most. Hold the door open for someone, buy a coffee for the person behind you in line, or smile and say hello to a stranger. I have rounded up some of my favorite Valentine’s finds below!

January Home Edit

When January rolls around we are all feeling ready to purge and organize. This can be extremely overwhelming for some so I like to think of it as a January home edit instead of a full organization overhaul. One of the most important things to remember is to start small.  I like to take individual drawers or shelves and give them an edit.  I do this in a few quick steps.

1. I remove everything from the drawer or shelf and then clean it well.  My handheld Dyson vacuum comes in handy here.

2. I take a minute to think about how I want to use that space before adding anything back. Some items might no longer fit there or are used somewhere else. I love to shop my own home to freshen things up.

3. I keep it simple and add items that I use back into the space.  For example, the image above is a little bookshelf nook in one of our bathrooms.  I keep it pretty and functional by adding items I use daily like folded hand towels, tissues in a pretty tissue holder, perfume, and some fresh flowers.

Drawers are another area I like to get organized in January. I go through and toss any spices that are expired and take note of what I’m running low on. I go through my linens and take out any that are looking worn. You can see how I like to keep my linens organized and ready directly on LTK.

If you’re looking for more ways to organize your home, I pulled together how I keep us organized in this blog post and how I keep our entry table styled and organized here. Best of luck in your own January home edit!
