Happy Friday

It’s hard to believe we are at the end of May. How is that even possible? Summer is officially here which means we are grilling and making lots of salads.

I found this recipe on Pinterest and it is pretty amazing. It’s going to be on repeat around here this summer.

Summer must haves

When it comes to summer I love to throw on a cute dress, slides, and sunnies. Keep it easy and it makes getting dressed even easier. I love a little tan too but don’t want all the wrinkles that come with it so I love using a self tanner every now and then and I apply with a mit. This is super important! and exfoliate first! And Gardenia Rattan is my go to summer scent.

Simply Elsa’s 5 Intentions for Summer

I recently read Elsa’s blog post on creating seasonal and daily intentions and it really hit home. Rather than focusing on a a resolution which we know puts so much pressure on each of us she chooses to focus on each season and day at hand. Each day is a gift and when we wake up each morning we are given the chance to start over. Head over to Elsa’s blog and give it a read. She also has great style so I am sure you will have a hard time leaving her site!

Happy Friday. From lilacs to peonies, my vases have been full of beauties from the backyard. This year I planted ten new peony plants that a friend picked up for me at a peony farm in southern Illinois. I am so excited to see how they do each year and it is going to be so hard to not cut from them for the first three years which is what is recommended. But you better believe year 3 we are filling those vases full of the coral variety I got! A couple of years ago I held my un bloomed peonies. It was exciting to pull them out of the fridge every couple of weeks to have new fresh blooms. Some worked and some did not. Here is an article on how to hold your blooms!

Fireplace Makeover

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

For a couple of years now I have wanted to paint the stone on our fireplace. Is it my dream fireplace? No, but when we gutted this house 12 plus years ago it is the stone that I chose. Did I have a clue what I was doing then? No.. but I sure learned a lot about what not to do! The reason I wanted to paint the fireplace is because it was such a heavy spot in this room. Had the room been larger with vaulted ceilings it would not have felt so heavy and dark. Having all of this time at home I have been able to catch up on some of my own projects and I knew this was one I needed to tackle. Thanks to my husband Adam we finished it on Mother’s Day.

When using a paint sprayer it is so important to hang plastic on the surround areas and put down drop cloths. Paint will spray off and if you don’t do this you will get tiny specks of paint that you will have to clean off your floor. This will take you just as long to do as it takes to paint.

I highly suggest using an oil base primer for the first coat. Make sure you wash/clean/spray out your sprayer each time. You don’t want it to get clogged and if you don’t clean it out you will ruin it.

After priming with your oil based primer apply two coats of water based paint to the stone. There are a few spots I have to go back in and touch up that I am seeing a few days later and thats ok. You can use a brush for that. But get your main painting done with your sprayer, it will save you so much time!

Once you get spraying it goes really fast. The longest part is hanging your plastic and taping everything off!

Happy Saturday morning. This was suppose to be up yesterday but sometimes we get busy and have to play catch up. That pretty much sums up the last week for me!

Last week we had the most gorgeous weather and we had dinner outside as much as possible. My mom bought me this beautiful table cloth in France, these were my grandmothers placemats and I just bought these beautiful napkins. It’s lilac season and they finished off the table beautifully. Just setting this outdoor table with pretty items made the dinner that much more special. I linked similar items for you below. The table and chairs are new.

Target purchases

A day behind and I apologize but yesterday I took the morning and went to Target alone. It was a whole new way of shopping. Face mask and all. I had not been inside of Target since early February, before our Florida vacation. I must say I enjoyed it! The spring clothes weren’t picked over, the only thing missing was hand soap. I took my time drank my coffee and enjoyed! Here are some of my favorite purchases from yesterday’s trip.

My lake house bedroom hat wall

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

I love a beach hat. Probably because my mom has always been notorious for wearing one. She has a beautiful collection of straw hats that she has picked up during her travels to Europe and the south. My bedroom wall needed art work but instead I decided a hat wall would be perfect for the empty space above my bed. We wear the hats and simply replace them when the beach day is done. Here is how I created my hat wall in 3 easy steps.

  1. Collect your straw hats and create your layout depending on the amount of hats you are going to use. You can either wing it or create a layout on the floor. I had 5 hats to use on my wall so I created a staggered effect. If you only have 3 hats you could do three in a row. If you have more than 5 you can play with the layout however you prefer.

  2. I used nails to hang my hats but you could also use hooks. I did not want any hardware showing so I opted for something discreet like a nail. I simply hammered the nail into the wall where I was going to hang each hat. Making sure there is plenty of space for each hat to lay out fully and not be crowded.

  3. Hang your hats. You may have to play with the arrangement if it involves different colors or textures. Just see what looks best to the eye!

A good night’s sleep

Here lately I have discovered If I really stick to my nighttime routine I will sleep. Right now I can only imagine how many people are not sleeping well because they are worried or not as active as normal. Just the change in routine can really mess with our sleep. There is nothing better than climbing into a bed with clean sheets, cozy pajamas, and a cup of nighttime tea. I also love white noise while I sleep. I use a loud fan and it is amazing. Below I included my bedtime favorites. I drink the tea about 30 min. before I go to sleep, plug in my fan, I put the Organica Dream lotion on my feet, throw on my sleep mask and get cozy.

Styling Your Coffee Table

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that I may earn a small commission from, at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I would or have used myself.

Styling your coffee table is an easy way to add instant personality and thought to your living space. There are many ways to style your coffee table depending on the shape. Today I am going to talk about styling a square table surface!

IMG_5939.jpg
  1. Create Sections. Since I am working with a square table here I divided my table into 4 sections.

  2. Place a large vase with flowers or stems to create a focal point in one zone. I also like how this adds height to the table!

  3. Stack coffee table books. Put some of your favorites out that show your personality or interests. There are so many beautiful options. Click here for my post on coffee table books!

  4. Create Layers with trays, books, bowls, and boxes.

  5. Use a pretty wooden bowl or woven box as a catch all or a place to stash remotes!

Happy Friday. It has been a busy and productive week. We had a little glimmer of sunshine and warmth and I was able to get so much done in the yard which felt amazing. I love working in the yard all day and then coming in for a hot shower and glass of wine. It feels so good to rest your head at night knowing how much you have accomplished.

I have also been spending a lot of time in the kitchen lately. Here are my kitchen essentials. I try to keep my kitchen aesthetic clean and neutral. The gold touch pans are my favorite. Make sure you get the non corrugated. Also my favorite crockpot is currently on sale. I have been using it a ton lately! Coffee Table Books

I love collecting coffee table books. They are great resources and I find them beautiful and interesting to add to your surfaces. I love layering them in bookshelves and on coffee tables. I also find it beautiful to open one up to a favorite page and lay it on open on your surface with a magnifying glass or paper weight. I have more than my fair share of coffee table books around my home and I get many questions on which are some of my favorites. So I have gathered together some to share with you.
