Things I Bought and Loved in August

August always feels like a little bit of a blur — the last weeks of summer, back-to-school prep, and trying to squeeze in every ounce of sunshine before fall officially arrives. In the middle of the chaos, I found myself leaning on a handful of things that made life a little easier (and a little prettier). From everyday wellness staples to wardrobe updates and even a few fun family finds, these are the things I bought and truly loved this past month.

Oura Ring – I’ve been loving the Oura for keeping an eye on sleep and wellness — such a helpful little tool for everyday.

Tuckernuck Mini Trench – A classic trench reimagined in a shorter silhouette — polished, easy, and perfect for transitional weather.

Skirt + Matching Top – I couldn’t resist this set; it’s chic yet comfortable, and I love that it works just as well together as it does mixed with basics.

Parker Tee – The kind of tee you grab on repeat — soft, flattering, and exactly what I want to wear with everything from denim to skirts.

Madewell Barrel Jean – The easy, laid-back jean with just the right amount of structure — my new go-to for everyday.

Collagen Peptides – I add a scoop to my coffee every morning (Adam does too); easy, no-fuss boost.

Suede Belt – The belt I keep reaching for—simple, chic, and instantly pulls a look together.

Gingham Tablecloth – Such a good price for an everyday-elevated table; pretty and practical.

Air Popcorn Popper – Afternoon lifesaver—my kids make popcorn after school almost every day.

Slip-On Sneakers – Love these for everyday — chic, comfortable, and easy to slip on and go.

5 Family-Approved Meals We Keep on Repeat

Dinner time can feel like a daily juggling act, but I’ve found that having a handful of tried-and-true recipes makes all the difference. These are five meals that never fail in our house — they’re simple enough for weeknights, delicious enough for everyone to enjoy, and best of all, kid-approved.

1. Blackened Salmon with Mango Salsa and Avocado

Fresh, flavorful, and so quick to pull together. The sweet mango salsa balances the spice on the salmon perfectly, and the creamy avocado makes it a hit with the whole crew.

2. Italian Basil Chicken Cutlets

Crispy, golden, and full of flavor — these basil chicken cutlets are a comfort-food favorite. I usually serve them with roasted veggies or pasta for a complete meal.

3. Creamy Caesar Salad + Grilled Chicken

A classic Caesar gets an upgrade with a creamy, homemade dressing. Adding grilled chicken turns it into a hearty, family-friendly dinner that’s fresh and satisfying.

4. Honey Bourbon Steak Tips

Tender steak tips with a sweet and savory glaze — this one feels a little special but is still easy enough for a weeknight. Great with mashed potatoes or a simple green salad.

5. Mini BBQ Cheddar Meatloaf

The ultimate comfort food with a fun twist — mini meatloaves topped with BBQ sauce and melted cheddar. My kids love the individual portions, and I love how easy they are to prep ahead.

These five meals are always in rotation for us — they strike the perfect balance of simple, flavorful, and family-friendly. If you’re looking for new weeknight staples, I can’t recommend them enough. If you want to know about My Kitchen Essentials, you can read about it here.

Game Day Essentials: Inside My Soccer/Tennis Mom Bag

These days, I feel like half of my life is lived on the sidelines. Between early morning practices, weekend games, and carpool drop-offs, my bag has become my survival kit. Over the years, I’ve learned what’s actually worth carrying- the things that keep me organized, comfortable, and ready for whatever the day throws at me. Here’s a peek inside my soccer/tennis mom bag:

What’s Inside My Soccer/Tennis Mom Bag

Sideline Staples

Sunscreen Stick– I keep a Supergoop! PLAY stick in my bag at all times. It’s quick to swipe on little faces before they run off to the field and easy for me to reapply, too.

Sunglasses- A pair of oversized sunnies instantly makes me feel put-together, even if I’ve been up since 6 a.m. with coffee in hand.

Towel or Blanket– A towel or blanket doubles as a seat cover or picnic mat, and I’ve used it more times than I can count when the grass is damp or the morning feels chilly. Finley also carries one in her tennis bag for her matches.

A Hat -because watching kids play for two hours in full sun is way more fun when you’re not squinting the whole time.

Snacks and Sips

Hydration – you can never have too many of these on hand.

Honey Sticks or Applesauce Pouches- These are my little sideline hack. The kids love them, they’re not messy, and they give a quick burst of energy between games or perfect for a half time pick me up.

Quick Fixes

Hair ties + first aid- Someone always needs a Band-Aid or a new ponytail holder. I keep both tucked into a small pouch so I don’t have to go digging.

Body Glide- Learned the hard way during tournament season… this is the only way to keep blisters away.

Cooling Towels- A little refresh that feels so good when it’s hot out.

For Me

Tinted Lip Balm- Because I may be on the sidelines but I still like to feel pulled together.

Detangling Brush– My kids borrow this as much as I use it- it’s become a permanent fixture in my bag.

The “Just in Case” Extras

Performance Grip Socks- Someone always forgets theirs, and it saves the day.

Athletic Tape- Between soccer and tennis, this always comes in handy. Plus the wrist tape is trending with the soccer boys.

Extra Grip- Nothing throws off your tennis game faster than a racket slipping in your hand. A quick regrip can save the match!

Having a bag that’s always ready to go has saved me countless times. It makes the chaos of sports season feel manageable, and honestly- it helps me enjoy those hours on the sidelines instead of dreading them. These little things keep us organized, hydrated, and happy… and that’s a win in my book!

Introducing the Coastal Fall Collection: NAVYBLEU x Margaret of York x Breck & Grier

This season, I’m thrilled to introduce a special collaboration that’s close to my heart: the Coastal Fall Collection with NAVYBLEU, featuring Breck & Grier. Inspired by the effortless style of coastal living and the warm grounding hues of fall, this collection blends timeless silhouettes, seasonal colors, and versatile pieces you’ll love wearing year after year. Whether you’re strolling along the beach on a crisp September morning, hosting friends on the porch, or layering up for a weekend getaway, these pieces are designed to take you seamlessly from late summer into autumn.

We brought the vision for the collection to life in Charleston, South Carolina, where cobblestone streets, pastel architecture, and sweeping coastal views made the perfect backdrop. Shot by photographer Katie Niemiec, the images capture the easy elegance and coastal charm that inspired every piece.

What Inspired the Coastal Fall Collection

The Coastal Fall Collection reimagines some of our most-loved prints and patterns from the Cove Hollow Collection in rich browns, warm neutrals, and a dreamy sky blue. The goal was to create pieces that feel like an extension of summer but with textures, tones, and layers that suit the cooler days ahead.

We also partnered with Breck & Grier to include their iconic handwoven totes- the perfect accessory to pair with your wardrobe. We even created a custom insert in the Emily Tote in Inkberry Brown for a special pairing.

The Coastal Fall Collection

The Alice Skirt

A best-seller for a reason, the Alice Skirt now comes in a beautiful brown floral print that’s both timeless and fresh. Pair it with a simple blouse for daytime or layer with a knit sweater as the temperature drops.

The Margaret Set

For an easy, polished look, the Margaret Set combines the Alice Skirt with a matching top. It’s perfect for everything from work meetings to weekend brunch, and it transitions beautifully into the evening with a change of shoes. It comes in sky blue and wiregrass brown.

The Madeline Jacket

Cooler mornings call for light layers, and our quilted jackets are a must-have. In neutral tones that pair with everything, these jackets add warmth without bulk-ideal for layering over dresses, skirts, or jeans. The Madeline Jacket is available in Sky Blue and Wiregrass Brown.

Brech & Grier Totes

No coastal-inspired collection would be complete without the perfect carryall. Breck & Grier’s handwoven totes are both practical and chic, whether you’re carrying them to the market, the beach, or on a weekend trip. Each one is designed to last and age beautifully over time.

How to Style the Coastal Fall Collection

One of my favorite things about this collection is how versatile it is. You can:

  • Wear the Margaret Set with sandals in August, then with boots and a jacket in October.

  • Pair the Alice Skirt with a tank or crisp blouse for a coastal look or a chunky knit or blazer for a fall-ready feel.

  • Use a Breck & Grier tote as your go-to bag for errands, travel, or even as a stylish work bag.

These pieces aren’t just for one season- they’re designed to be wardrobe staples that carry you through multiple seasons in style.

Where to Shop the Collection

The Coastal Fall Collection is available now exclusively through NAVYBLEU and Breck & Grier. So whether you’re looking for a statement skirt, a timeless set, or the perfect fall tote, this collaboration is all about elevated coastal style for the new season.

The Timeless Summer Pieces I’m Grabbing from the LANDS’ END Prime Day Sale

Every July, I look for a selection of truly great Prime Day deals—pieces that resonate with my style, that I’ll wear frequently, and that are versatile enough for both a porch in Illinois and poolside in Florida. This year, Lands’ End really hit the mark with timeless summer staples: think crisp canvas totes, easy white gauze dresses, and flattering swimsuits. In this post, I’m sharing exactly what I purchased from their Prime Day sale and why these are the kinds of items you’ll want to wear year after year.

LANDS’ END PRIME DAY SALE

Lands’ End is a brand that consistently offers timeless silhouettes, high-quality fabrics, and pieces that last from one season to the next. During Prime Day, the prices are unbeatable, making it the perfect opportunity to stock up on my favorite classics. I love their iconic canvas totes, flattering swimsuits, and breezy layers, all available at a fraction of the usual cost. Whether I’m dressing for the porch, the pool, or a last-minute weekend getaway, Lands’ End always has something that suits the occasion.

My Favorite Prime Day Finds from LANDS’ END and How I Styled Them

Let’s get into the good stuff-the actual pieces I added to cart and why they’re worth grabbing while they’re on sale. These aren’t trendy one-hit wonders. They’re versatile, well-made, and effortlessly classic- exactly the kind of staples I build my summer wardrobe around.

The Iconic Canvas Tote

I’ve loved this tote bag for years and use it constantly. It’s roomy, structured, and monogrammable-which makes it a go-to for everything from farmers markets to beach days. Currently, it’s available for under $30 and comes in multiple sizes.

The White Gauze Skirt and Top

This was an instant yes. Lightweight, breathable, and versatile, perfect for dressing up or down. I’ve already worn the shirt open over a swimsuit and the skirt over my swimsuit! It’s perfect as a set for dinner on the porch. Timeless, flattering, and perfectly breezy.

The Coastal Classic Swimsuit

I am picky about swimwear, and these hit the mark. They are supportive, lined, and subtly chic. The colorblock swimsuit has a modern feel yet remains classic enough to wear year after year. The white swimsuit is a must-have for me because it pairs beautifully with any pareo or beach cover-up.

The Perfect Shirt Dress

The ultimate throw-on shirt dress. Great as a cover-up, a travel layer, or styled with white denim for a coastal preppy look. It’s such an easy layering piece, whether styled or unbuttoned. Perfect from the beach to iced tea runs. I went with a size small, and it has a very relaxed fit. For a sleeker look, I recommend sizing down.

Why These Pieces Are Timeless

What I love most about these pieces is that they don’t chase trends—they transcend them. A crisp canvas tote, a classic white gauze set, and a flattering one-piece swimsuit are the building blocks of a well-edited wardrobe. These items remain relevant year after year, whether you’re styling for summer at home, enjoying beach days away, or layering them with a cardigan and denim for early fall. The silhouettes are simple, the fabrics are dependable, and the overall look is always effortlessly polished. This is the kind of style I keep returning to—it’s worth investing in, especially during the Prime Day Sale.

Shop the Sale Before It’s Gone

If you have been waiting for a sign to refresh your summer staples or finally grab that Lands’ End tote you’ve had your eye on, this is it. These pieces are well-made, classic, and marked down just for Prime Day. You can shop the entire Lands’ End sale here on their Amazon storefront. Grab them while they’re part of the Prime Day Sale- I promise, these are the kinds of pieces that stay in your closet and your rotation.

How To Layer A Bed

How To Layer A Bed

Creating a cozy and inviting bedroom is one of those delightful projects that truly transforms a house into a home. There’s something utterly enchanting about a beautifully layered bed; it’s like an invitation to sink into relaxation at the end of a long day. Not only does a well-dressed bed exude a sense of luxury and warmth, but it also elevates the overall comfort of the space.

Now, I know that with an array of bedding options out there, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to figure out just how to achieve that coveted, perfectly styled look. Today, I’ll take you through my favorite tips and tricks for layering your bed like a pro. Together, we’ll navigate through the intricate layers of linens, duvets, and throw pillows to create a sanctuary that reflects your style. Let’s dive in and start crafting a bedroom that feels both chic and inviting—a place where every detail whispers comfort and elegance.

How To Layer A Bed

Making your bed each morning is more than just a daily chore; it’s a powerful way to set a positive tone for your day. A well-made bed creates an inviting atmosphere in your bedroom and can significantly enhance the overall aesthetic of the space. By layering your bedding intentionally—combining different textures, colors, and patterns—you not only elevate the visual appeal but also create a cozy retreat to unwind in at the end of the day.  Start your day with a sense of accomplishment and transform your bedroom into a sanctuary you love to return to!

Why Is Making Your Bed Important

Making your bed each day is more than just a simple chore; it has numerous benefits that can improve your overall well-being and productivity. Incorporating the habit of making your bed into your daily routine can have lasting positive effects on your mindset and living space. Here are a few reasons why it’s essential to start your day by making your bed:

Creates a Sense of Accomplishment

Completing this small task first thing in the morning can give you a feeling of achievement and set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Promotes Organization

A made bed contributes to a tidy and organized living space, which can reduce stress and help you feel more in control of your environment.

Encourages Good Habits

Making your bed daily can instill discipline and encourage you to maintain other good habits throughout the day.

Enhances Sleep Quality

A neatly made bed can create a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere, promoting better sleep at night.

Improves Focus

A clean and orderly space can help you concentrate better on tasks, leading to increased productivity.

Sets the Right Mood

Coming home to a well-made bed can create a sense of calm and relaxation, making your home feel more welcoming.

What Are The Different Bed-Making Techniques

Making your bed is not just a chore; it’s an opportunity to create a warm and inviting sanctuary.  By embracing these steps, you’ll transform your bed into a beautiful retreat, embodying both comfort and style that beckons you to unwind and relax. Here are some elegant tips to elevate your bed-making technique:

The “Coastal Crisp” Layered Look

Coastal Crisp layered bed

This is my go-to in the summer months. Picture this: cool white sheets, a soft blue linen quilt, and a folded duvet at the foot, just in case a breeze rolls in. I like to layer different textures — cotton, linen, perhaps a bit of matelassé — and always finish with four pillows propped just so. It feels like a beach house where someone’s just come in with sun-kissed cheeks and sand on their ankles.

The “Tucked & Tailored” Hotel Style

Hotel Style bed making

On days when I want a little extra structure (or clarity), I turn to a more tailored approach. Corners sharply tucked in, the sheets are smooth and taut, and there is a certain symmetry in the arrangement. Think fresh pressed percale sheets, a simple monogram on the pillows, and a neutral palette with a quiet stripe or border. It’s not fussy, but it whispers, “I’ve got it together.”

The “Softly Rumpled Sunday Morning” Look

bed making techniques

Some mornings call for ease. For sleep lingering in the air and coffee waiting in the kitchen. This bed is made… but just barely. A linen duvet is loosely draped, maybe one corner is flipped back to reveal the sheets. Pillows aren’t stacked, they’re nestled. This bed says, “Stay a little longer”. It’s the in between of effort and exhale. I find this version is easy for teenagers who don’t enjoy making their beds!

The “Collected & Cozy” Cottage Mix

cottage style bed making

This one is for my sentimentalist. The ones who use the quilt their grandmother stitched or tuck an embroidered pillow in the middle just because it reminds them of summers in Provence. The sheets might be floral, but the shams might not match; however, they complement each other in a beautiful mix and match. There’s a sense of layers built over time—collected, not curated. It feels like love lives here.

How To Layer Your Bed Like A Pro

How To Layer Your Bed Like A Pro

Step 1: Gather Your Essentials

Begin by collecting all the necessary items—a soft mattress protector, a fitted sheet, a smooth flat sheet, cozy blankets or a plush duvet insert, and an assortment of fluffy and decorative pillows.

Step 2: Protect Your Mattress

Place a mattress protector on your bed to keep your mattress clean and fresh; it serves as an excellent foundation for a beautiful bed. My personal favorite mattress is from Amerisleep. It is incredibly comfortable, and I believe that taking care of your mattress is very important.

Step 3: Dress the Mattress

Gently stretch a high-quality fitted sheet over the mattress, ensuring it fits snugly around the corners to create a smooth surface that invites you in. I have tried so many sheets over the years, and nothing compares to my favorite non-iron set.

Step 4: Layer with Elegance

Next, drape the top sheet evenly over the fitted sheet, ensuring the top edge aligns perfectly with the head of the bed. Leave a generous overhang on the sides to tuck under for a polished finish.

Step 5: Add Comforting Layers

Place your duvet cover on top of the flat sheet. I have tried so many duvet inserts over the years. Many people offer various suggestions on how to achieve a perfectly fluffy look. Some suggest doubling up two duvets, but really, you only need one good one. My favorite duvet insert can be found here. When layering, choose lighter fabrics on top and gradually incorporate heavier ones for warmth and texture. I like to fold my duvet cover in half and then fold it back up toward the head of the bed. This creates a sumptuous and fluffy look.

Step 6: Tuck with Care

Neatly tuck the flat sheet and comforter under the mattress at the foot and sides. For that luxurious hotel feel, fold back the top edge of both sheets to reveal a glimpse of the inviting layers beneath.

Step 7: Arrange Your Pillows

Place your sleeping pillows against the back.   I like to stack my pillows or lay them flat and stacked. In front, artfully layer standard or euro shams to create a charming display. For a queen bed, I recommend two standard shams or two euro shams.  For a king, I like to add three euro shams across the back. I often love to add a linen lumbar pillow across the front of the euros.

Step 8: Add a Cozy Throw

For a finishing touch, drape a soft throw blanket in a solid color or print gracefully across the top of the duvet or delicately over one side, inviting snuggles on chilly nights.

Step 9: Perfect the Details

Step back and admire your bed styling. Adjust any items to ensure a harmonious and tidy appearance, creating a stunning focal point in your bedroom. In the end, bed making isn’t about perfection- it’s about how you want to feel when you walk into the room. If you’re going to take it a step further, you can make some adjustments to your nightstand. Whether it’s buttoned up or barely there, I say make the bed that matches your morning.

My Kitchen Essentials

My Kitchen Essentials

I adore spending time in my kitchen. It’s a space where countless memories are created, and everyone gathers as a family. Each morning, I prepare a large breakfast and pack lunches, and while I prep dinner, the kids do their homework here. It’s one of my happy places and over the years I’ve created a kitchen that is bright and cheerful. Cooking for my family brings me immense joy, and I cherish the time spent in this space. It’s important to me to ensure it’s stocked with all the kitchen essentials to guarantee everyone enjoys a beautiful meal. We don’t typically eat out at restaurants very often unless we’re traveling for the kids’ sports and ordering for delivery isn’t really an option out on the farm.

Today, I’m going to share some of my favorite kitchen essentials. Some I use daily, while others are for special occasions like hosting holidays and birthdays; but all are equally valuable tools that I love! While not everyone has the storage space for all of these kitchen items, I recommend thinking about what kitchen tools you reach for most often and invest in those. Do you only use a standing mixer once a year? You could probably pare down to a hand mixer. If you’re not one to host gatherings in your home, you’d likely not need as much serving ware. Thinking through questions like this will help you narrow down your own kitchen essentials. Here are my go-to items.

My Kitchen Essentials

Small Kitchen Appliances

These small kitchen appliances are among my most essential tools. I use our Nespresso and juicer first thing in the morning and rely on the crockpot for meal prepping during those busy evenings with the kids. These appliances are ones I reach for almost every day. Some are kept out on the counter for easy access, while others are stored away until needed.

In addition to these favorites, I also find my blender invaluable for making smoothies and sauces, and my toaster oven is perfect for quick snacks and reheating leftovers. Each of these appliances brings convenience and efficiency to my cooking routine, allowing me to spend more quality time with my family. Whether it’s preparing breakfast, lunch, or dinner, having the right tools at my fingertips makes all the difference in creating delicious meals effortlessly.

Pots, Pans, Bakeware

The other kitchen heroes are my pots, pans, and bakeware. I’ve found that investing in quality products means I need to replace them less often. Along with the small appliances, I use them almost every day. The Goldtouch bakeware is a recent purchase for me this year, and has been great!

When it comes to kitchen gear, I’ve learned that quality investment pieces truly make a difference. For instance, my stainless steel pots and cast iron pans have become staples in my cooking routine. They not only distribute heat evenly but also last for years, if not decades, with proper care. It’s so satisfying to know that, rather than cheap, flimsy alternatives that warp or scratch easily, I have reliable tools that withstand daily use.

These investment pieces also elevate my cooking experience; the ease of cooking and cleanup, thanks to high-quality non-stick surfaces and durable materials, encourages me to try new recipes and techniques. In the long run, they save money and time, allowing me to focus on what I love most: creating delicious meals.

Dinnerware

I have a nicer porcelain set of plates and bowls that we use frequently, but I also have a melamine set of plates for quick meals or when we’re dining outside. I keep it simple with glassware, wineglasses, and a quality set of ivory flatware.

When it comes to family-friendly dining, I strive to maintain a balance between practicality and elegance. The melamine set is not only durable and shatterproof, making it perfect for little hands, but it also comes in beautiful designs that can add a cheerful touch to our outdoor gatherings. I love incorporating colorful napkins and simple centerpieces for an extra pop, creating an inviting atmosphere without sacrificing aesthetics. This way, we can enjoy family meals while keeping everything both beautiful and functional.

Servingware

These items are great for hosting. From placemats to serving boards and pasta bowls, these are what I reach for when company is coming. I love to use the glass cloche dome to display any baked goods. It brings a little dose of cafe chic to the kitchen.

Tools

These small tools are so helpful to keep on hand and don’t take up too much space. A set of high-quality knives will make meal prepping significantly easier. While not necessarily a kitchen essential for everyone, I love the handheld frother for my morning coffee. It’s a little treat that makes me smile.

Organization

As a mom of four and the wife of a farmer, I rely on reusable containers for meals and snacks on the go. They’re perfect for the kids to throw in their bags and for Adam to take with him when he’s in the fields. I like to decant my spices into the spice jars because it helps me see if we’re running low on them. There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of cooking and realizing you don’t have the spice you need.

Everything Else

When it comes to creating a functional kitchen, having the right cooking tools makes all the difference. A quality knife set is essential, featuring a chef’s knife for precise chopping and a paring knife for more delicate tasks. Stainless steel cooking utensils are not only durable but also dishwasher-safe, making cleanup a breeze. I love using a slotted spoon for draining pasta and measuring cups and spoons for accurate ingredient portions.

A sturdy cutting board is essential for protecting your countertops, while mixing bowls in various sizes help with preparing different dishes. Don’t forget the oven-safe sheet pan, which is perfect for roasting vegetables or baking cookies. A reliable garlic press can elevate your recipes with ease. In my kitchen, I appreciate tools that are easy to clean, allowing me to focus on enjoying the cooking process rather than stressing about the mess!

How Do You Make Your Closet Smell Good

How Do You Make Your Closet Smell Good

This may not be the prettiest post you’ll come across, but the topic we’re discussing today is incredibly important for anyone who values their wardrobe. There’s something undeniably refreshing about opening a closet filled with clothes that smell clean and inviting. Unfortunately, fabrics can quickly absorb odors from the environment, making it challenging to maintain that fresh scent. However, keeping your closet smelling good is not just about aesthetics; it also helps ensure that your clothes, bags, and accessories maintain their appeal. Today, I’m excited to share a roundup of effective methods to keep your closet smelling delightful at all times. Let’s dive into some simple yet impactful tips to transform your wardrobe’s aroma!

How Do You Make Your Closet Smell Good

In this post, you’ll discover practical and effective tips to make your closet smell delightful and fresh. Whether you’re dealing with musty odors or just looking to enhance the overall ambiance of your storage space, we’ve got you covered. Expect to find a variety of simple steps and natural solutions that anyone can implement, regardless of budget or time constraints. From essential oils to clever organizing techniques, this guide aims to provide you with helpful insights that can transform your closet into a fragrant haven, ensuring your closet smells fresh and inviting. Get ready to elevate your wardrobe experience with these easy-to-follow suggestions!

What Causes Musty Smell In Closet

A musty smell in your closet is often caused by moisture, poor ventilation, mold, and mildew growth. If you notice your closet smells musty, addressing these issues promptly is important. To keep your closet smelling great, ensure good airflow, use moisture absorbers, and regularly clean to minimize mold and mildew buildup. Here are the most common culprits:

  • Humidity or Damp Air—Closets often have poor airflow, so excess moisture gets trapped and creates a musty environment.
  • Mold or Mildew– Moisture from damp clothes, shoes, or even walls can lead to mold or mildew, which produces a musty, earthy odor
  • Dirty or Damp Clothes– Storing clothes that weren’t fully clean or dry can contribute to unpleasant smells over time.
  • Old Wood or Insulation– In older homes, materials inside closet walls or shelving may hold moisture and develop odors.
  • Lack of Air Circulation– Closets with closed doors for long periods trap stale air and allow smells to build up.
  • Stored Items Absorbing Moisture– cardboard boxes, fabric bins, or linens can absorb humidity and develop musty odors over time.

How To Keep Closet Smelling Fresh

Use Moisture Absorbers

Moisture absorbers such as baking soda, charcoal, and silica gel effectively control odors caused by humidity. They help absorb excess moisture that can lead to mildew and mustiness. Charcoal is also helpful for neutralizing odors. It’s recommended to replace or recharge these absorbers regularly: use baking soda monthly and activated charcoal every 2-3 months. Additionally, be mindful of their placement to avoid any spills.

Keep Closet Well Ventilated.

For long-term odor control, keeping your closet well ventilated is important. Opening closet doors or adding a small fan improves airflow and prevents stale air buildup. This isn’t always easy in small spaces or closets without outlets. If installing a fan, opt for a quiet one designed for small spaces.

Avoid Storing Damp or Dirty Clothes

Storing damp or dirty clothing in your closet will create an unpleasant scent and on your clothes. Washing your clothes thoroughly and then ensuring they are clean and dry will prevent moisture from being introduced into your closet, which helps avoid mustiness from forming, eliminates odor, and provides your clothes smell great. Make sure your items are fully dry, especially towels, gym clothes, or shoes, before storing them in your closet. You can add dryer balls to your dryer to help speed the drying process and ensure that your items are fully dry.

Use Natural Deodorizers

Natural deodorizers such as lavender sachets, cedar blocks, and essential oil diffusers are effective for masking mild odors and adding a pleasant fragrance to your space, making it smell great. These items create a subtle, fresh scent that makes the area feel cleaner. Additionally, lavender and cedar can help repel moths. It’s recommended to replace these deodorizers every 1 to 3 months, depending on their strength and the size of your closet. Remember that strong essential oils, especially your favorite ones, may stain clothing. Another option is to soak cotton balls in your favorite essential oils and place them throughout the closet for a delightful aroma.

Clean Your Closet Regularly

Regularly cleaning and vacuuming your closet prevents dust, mold, and hidden moisture buildup—a cleaner space results in fewer odor-causing sources. Wipe down shelves, vacuum floors, and check for leaks or mold spots at least once each season.

Store Items in Breathable Containers

Storing your items in breathable containers (avoid plastic) helps prevent trapped moisture and stale smells. Fabric bins or baskets with ventilation allow air to circulate, keeping items fresher. Plastic containers trap moisture unless you use desiccant packs inside. Use canvas or open-weave baskets or bins for everyday items.

Add A Closet Air Purifier or Deodorizer

Consider adding a closet air purifier or deodorizer that effectively absorbs bad odors for persistent smells. This is an excellent way to neutralize odors, purify the air, and keep your closet smelling great, especially in spaces with little ventilation. Some models require power outlets or batteries, so keep that in mind. Choose one with a filter or deodorizing function, not just fragrance, to ensure it works effectively alongside traditional air fresheners.

Moving Beyond The Closet

How To Make Your House Smell Good Naturally

How To Make Your House Smell Good Naturally

Creating a home that smells good is one of the easiest and most underrated ways to elevate the feel of your home. A fresh-smelling house feels much more inviting to guests, makes a positive first impression, and can even boost your own mood.

But, while many people turn to artificial air fresheners or strongly scented candles to achieve this effect, these solutions aren’t as good as they seem. Artificial scents are known for containing chemicals that can irritate the lungs, trigger allergies, and even disrupt hormones.

That’s why I’m sharing this guide on how to keep your house smelling good naturally. These methods are healthier and safer, but also highly effective. So, if you’re ready to ditch synthetic fragrances for good and embrace healthier alternatives, keep reading!

How To Make Your House Smell Good Naturally

This post will be your go-to guide for safe, natural, and sustainable ways to say goodbye to bad odors and fill your home with scents that smell great. Making your house smell good naturally has never been easier with these tips. Whether you’re dealing with lingering odors or just want your home to smell fresh every day, this post has got you covered!

What Makes Your House Smell Good All The Time?

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a miracle worker. In my opinion, it should be in every home simply because of how universal it is. Baking soda is ideal for neutralizing bad odors, especially in places like closets, bathrooms, and refrigerators. It doesn’t have a strong scent itself, but it gets rid of lingering odors to help your space smell fresh naturally. Just place an open container of baking soda where odors tend to build up (such as in your fridge or in the bathroom) or sprinkle it on carpeted areas.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is yet another godsend when it comes to universal items in your home. It’s great for cleaning up grime and neutralizing any bad odors that are making your home smell less than ideal. It’s cost-effective, easy to find, and easy to use. Does it get much better than that?

Essential Oils

Essential oils like lavender, lemon, eucalyptus and peppermint offer a nice range of natural fragrance options. Add just a few drops in a diffuser or spray bottle with water and spritz it around your home. Essential oils don’t just smell good they can also have calming or energizing effects.

Simmering Pot

Also known as stovetop potpourri, a simmering pot is a great way to bring inviting scents into your home. With citrus peels, cinnamon sticks, and more, it’s a great way to add a seasonal scent to your home.

Fresh Plants/Herbs

Live plants like rosemary, eucalyptus, and basil can give off a very clean, subtle scent while also purifying the air. Place them in open spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, or living rooms to make your home smell fresh.

Scented Candles

If you love the ambience of candles, you don’t have to say goodbye to them completely. Simply opt for those made from soy, coconut, or beeswax with natural essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances. These provide a pleasant yet subtle scent without the added health risks that are associated with paraffin or heavily perfumed candles.

Fresh Flowers

There’s nothing more beautiful than fresh flowers in your home especially when they smell good, too! I adore the smell of fresh flowers and how they can add a pop of color and a sweet scent wherever you place them. There’s nothing quite like it; they add elegance, fragrance, and a touch of nature indoors.

Open up the windows.

One of the easiest and most effective things you can do to remove stale air in your home and bring in a fresh scent is to open the windows. Even just 10 minutes of open window time a day can dramatically improve the air quality in your home. Plus, I find it so peaceful and relaxing feeling the cool breeze sweep through. It almost feels like it washes out any bad energy or negativity, like a total reset at the end of each day.

Use a spray bottle or diffuser with essential oils.

Another great way to help your house smell good naturally is to mix some water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil in a spray bottle for a quick and easy room refresh. Glass bottles are much better for this as they preserve the smell of the spray for longer and you can also refill them as needed. This DIY air freshener is perfect for eliminating bad odors and leaving a nice, subtle scent behind.

Clean with hot water and vinegar.

Hot water and vinegar is a natural staple in my home for how well it cleans and removes any odors. I just mix hot water with a tablespoon or two of white vinegar to clean surfaces like countertops, floors, and sinks. It’s definitely my go-to for when the house needs a quick wipe down at the end of the day.

Simmer a slow cooker potpourri.

This one is an elite option for making your home smell delicious. I like to place herbs, citrus peels, and even some essential oils mixed with water in a slow cooker and set it to low. It gives such a warm, homely feel thanks to all of the seasonal smells. Keeping it on a warm, low setting acts like a slow-release fragrance and can keep your home smelling amazing all day.

Deodorize carpets with baking soda.

Sick of chemical-filled, overpowering carpet deodorizer? Me too! Simply sprinkle some baking soda onto your carpets, let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, and then vacuum it up. This is one of my favorite ways to tackle any residual carpet smells.

Add in subtle scents with sachets.

If you’re looking for a more subtle, clean smell that lingers, small sachets filled with dried lavender, rosemary, or cedar chips in drawers, closets, and under pillows are a great idea. These subtle scent sachets will slowly release fragrance over time and help to keep your home and everything in it smelling pleasant.

Eliminate any moisture.

If you’re consistently struggling with odors in your home, it’s important to figure out what may be causing it. Damp areas such as basements, bathrooms, or closets can harbor mildew and cause bad odors. Use a dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing crystals to tackle these areas head-on.

Wash your linens frequently.

Another good tip is to make sure that you wash your linens often. Of course, we all know to wash our bedding regularly, but we often overlook other linen materials throughout the home such as curtains, pillows, and upholstery. These types of things can trap lingering odors, making your home smell. Wash them regularly with a natural detergent and add a few drops of essential oils during the rinse cycle for a more crisp freshness.

Air out cushions and rugs.

Much like linens, cushions and rugs can trap smells. Make sure you take your cushions, rugs, and heavy blankets outside to air out occasionally. Sunlight and fresh air work wonders in reviving these items and getting rid of any stale smells.

How to Wear a Sweater Over a Dress

When it comes to personal style, it’s always exciting to find new ways to breathe life into your favorite pieces. One of my favorite styling tricks is wearing a sweater over a dress. This simple yet effective combination not only keeps you cozy but also adds a whole new dimension to your outfit, making your wardrobe more versatile. However, finding the perfect pair of sweater and dress can sometimes feel a bit tricky. The right choices can elevate your look, while the wrong ones can leave you feeling mismatched. That’s why I’m excited to share this guide on how to successfully wear a sweater over a dress, helping you master this chic trend effortlessly! Let’s dive in!

How To Wear A Sweater Over A Dress

Wearing a sweater over a dress is a stylish choice that proves especially great during seasonal transitions. As temperatures fluctuate between chilly mornings and warmer afternoons, this layering technique offers warmth without sacrificing elegance. However, finding the right sweater to pair with the right dress can be a bit tricky. It’s essential to consider the dress’s silhouette and fabric; for instance, a fitted sweater often complements a flowy midi dress beautifully, while a chunky knit might pair better with a more structured dress. Balancing proportions is key to achieving an effortlessly chic look. When done right, this combination not only enhances your outfit but also provides a timeless appeal that remains fashionable year after year.

Can You Wear A Sweater Over A Dress?

Wearing a sweater over a dress is not only possible but can also be a stylish choice that embraces traditional aesthetics. This layering technique can add warmth and texture, especially during transitional weather. Opt for a fitted or slightly cropped sweater to maintain the dress’s silhouette and avoid overwhelming it. Choosing a classic style, like a cardigan or a pullover in neutral or coordinating colors, can enhance the overall look while keeping it polished. To complete your outfit, consider adding a pair of ankle boots or classic pumps, ensuring that your ensemble remains both comfortable and elegant.

How Do You Wear A Sweater Over A Dress

Layer a Cropped Sweater Over a Maxi Dress

Layering a cropped sweater over a maxi dress creates a beautifully balanced silhouette that flatters any body type. The cropped length defines your waist, while the contrasting textures of a chunky knit and flowing fabric add visual interest. Opt for a neutral-toned sweater to complement vibrant dresses, and accessorize with statement earrings and ankle boots for a chic yet casual look. As temperatures drop, you can easily add a denim or leather jacket for extra warmth. This combination not only revitalizes your favorite dresses but also showcases your style versatility, making the transition from day to night effortlessly chic!

CASUAL POLISH

The sweater makes the outfit feel relaxed and lived-in, while the dress adds a bit of elegance. Together, it’s a mix of cozy and graceful, ideal for a “coastal grandmother” or Nancy Meyers-inspired vibe.

Pair With a Chunky Knit

Wearing a chunky knit sweater over a dress can effortlessly elevate your outfit while adding warmth and texture. To achieve this look, select a sleek, form-fitting dress—perhaps a midi or maxi style—that complements your body shape. Choose a chunky knit sweater in a contrasting color or a neutral tone to create a balanced ensemble. Layer the sweater over the dress, allowing it to drape casually for an effortless vibe. You can leave the sweater unbuttoned or half-tucked to highlight your waistline, which adds dimension to your look. Pair this outfit with ankle boots or stylish sneakers for a chic, relaxed finish. This combination not only keeps you cozy but also introduces an interesting interplay between the sleek silhouette of the dress and the cozy bulk of the knit, making it perfect for transitional seasons or casual outings.

Tied Over The Shoulders

Wearing a sweater draped or knotted over your shoulders instantly adds a touch of effortless sophistication to any outfit. This style references classic preppy fashion while also being practical for layering as the weather changes. It’s the simplest way to carry an extra layer without fully committing to wearing it.

Monochrome Harmony

Layering a sweater over a dress in a monochrome look is effortlessly chic and instantly elevates your outfit. Sticking to one color palette-whether it’s all creams, blacks, or soft neutrals-creates a streamlined, polished style that looks intentional and put together. This look feels fresh and transitional, making it ideal for early spring or early fall.

Cardigan Style

Buttoning the cardigan all the way gives it the look of a top, making the layering feel intentional rather than haphazard. This simple trick enhances the overall appearance, making it look polished and put together. The fitted blue cardigan adds sharpness and structure to the voluminous white dress. This contrast in shapes keeps the look modern and prevents it from feeling overly sweet or flowy.

Layering a sweater over a dress not only adds a stylish twist to your outfit but also keeps you comfortable during unpredictable spring weather. Whether you choose a lightweight knit or a cozy cardigan, this versatile technique allows you to express your personal style effortlessly. So, don’t hesitate to experiment and wear a sweater over your favorite dresses to create chic and cozy looks this season. For more ideas, you can read about my spring wardrobe must-haves!
